Better late than never, it's #BeetleOfTheWeek #no5. Say hello to the Ant Beetle (Thanasimus formicarius). Look for them on pine & spruce from May to August, hunting Bark Beetles. Fairly widespread in #Herts, but not numerous.

It's that time again! #Beetleoftheweek is Diaperis boleti, sometimes known as the Yellow-banded Polypore Darkling #beetle. It's a nationally scarce species, but can be found in gd numbers in some southern areas such as South Herts. It feeds on decaying bracket fungi, esp. Birch Polypore. #coleoptera

Introducing #beetleoftheweek #no.3, Typhaeus typhoeus, the Minotaur Beetle. Found on sandy soils, this dor beetle is the only 'dung-roller' in the UK. Males have three horns on their thorax. Keep a look out for Minotaurs in autumn on sandy grassland and heathland. #coleoptera #beetles
