In summer of 1940 the #SovietUnion seized #Bessarabia & #NorthernBukovina from #Romania without a fight — an area of nearly four million people. Some of these tried to flee, including the up to 200 killed by border troops in the #FântânaAlbăMassacre on #ThisDayInHistory in 1941.

While looking over my old maps back in 2022, I discovered that one nicely depicted #SnakeIsland. It is a map of #Bessarabia by Franz Johann Joseph von Reilly (Vienna, 1791) with Snake Island ("Schlangen In[sel]") depicted to the left of the scale.

The Muscovite start to invade present Moldova (then known as Bessarabia, Kingdom of Romania) on June 28, 1940.
It will be an administrative amputation, which Romania is still paying nowadays.
