BBC World Service - 50 Things That Made the Modern Economy, Bicycle Has the bicycle had its day, or is it a technology whose best years lie ahead?

A fascinating podcast!
The #bicycle was to prove transformative. Cheaper than a horse, it freed women and young working class people to roam free. And the bike was the testing ground for countless improvements in manufacturing that would later lead to Henry Ford’s production lines.

A dandy #bicycle given a needy starving artist who had a car breakdown.
This kept him going. Life-saving.
(Our founder can relate. He's a starving artist, too, but is creative enough to do this amazing Project with virtually no resources, no grants, no tax dollars, rare donations.)

"To men, the bicycle in the beginning was merely a new toy, another machine added to the long list of devices they knew in their work and play. To women, it was a steed upon which they rode into a new world," regaled Munsey’s Magazine in 1896.

Even today, the #bicycle is #freedom.

When funds are low and times are bad,
And all my thoughts but dull, or sad,
Whose bright looks still can make me glad?
My bicycle.

Or, when I'm ill, and it may hap
About my food care not a rap,
Who takes me on a loving lap?
My bicycle.

Pedals of Peace
Love's the breeze that caresses the face,
A warmth in the chest, a shared, sacred space.
The road hums a song of unity’s call,
No borders, no burdens, no walls to forestall.
In the spin of the wheel, love’s colors entwine,
Every spoke a connection, human and divine.

With you, the joys truly never really end.

Creating great memories goes on and on.
Through the day, the sun's golden shine,

No more rutted dirt roads filled with poop.
Instead, they created streets to ride on smoother surfaces.
