Look forward to seeing The RSPB’s @rspb.bsky.social Big Garden Birdwatch results come out in April. #BigGardenBirdwatch
The weekend of the #BigGardenBirdwatch I was counting birds coming to some feeders and recorded no siskins, despite their usual visits. Later in the day in the same locality I saw a huge flock of 50+ birds moving through woodland. Perhaps there was enough wild food available?
A small, round Long-tailed Tit perches on a branch, its tiny feet gripping the bark. Its soft white face and dark eyes peer sweetly at the viewer, head tilted ever so slightly as if politely reminding them to submit their Big Garden Birdwatch results. The gentle lighting and fluffy feathers add to its endearing, well-mannered presence.
Oh, hello...
This *adorable* Long Tailed Tit would like to remind you to submit your #BigGardenBirdwatch results before 22nd February!
Every count, counts 👉 www.rspb.org.uk/whats-happen...
A Blue Tit is perched on a branch facing straight into the camera.
Have you submitted your #BigGardenBirdwatch results yet?
You’ve got until 22 February to let us know which feathered friends you spent your hour with. Whether you were hanging out with a gang of House Sparrows or had a quiet cuppa with a solitary Blue Tit submit your results here: brnw.ch/21wXHlZ
Dear @rspb.bsky.social,
Can I do my #BigGardenBirdwatch again? There are 2 lovely greenfinches having a party in my garden right now but they weren't around when I counted!
NB rest assured, Robin, I have submitted my results.
Also totally forgot I'd ordered all this from the RSPB for the #biggardenbirdwatch so at least I don't have to rush out to stock back up!
A Robin perches on a thin branch, its bright orange breast puffed out. Its head is tilted to the side, giving an unblinking, questioning stare, its small, sharp beak is pointed in your direction as if about to demand an explanation. The judgement is palpable. This bird knows you haven’t submitted your results yet, and it is not impressed.
This Robin wants to know why you haven't submitted your #BigGardenBirdwatch results yet?
Better hop to it! He's watching... 👀

(Robin says sorry & thank you very much if you have, in fact, submitted your count).
Blackcap, nowadays a fairly frequent winter visitor to our garden. Would've been nice if it had turned up last weekend for the #BigGardenBirdwatch

Last week it was all about Birds in preparation for Big Garden Birdwatch that happened over the weekend. The children got to know new things about the birds they see, made bird masks and were all given a sheet to do their own bird watch at home.

One of the local Robin pair (they often use a Robin box on the barn) keeping an eye on my #BigGardenBirdwatch activities, they were reported in 83% of BGB in East Sussex in 2024 and in 98% of Sussex BTO GBW - long may they cheer our gardens.

It's not one of my best #photograph but I really like the composition and how the reflections combine to make it look almost like a tapestry. And having just taken part in the @rspbcymru.bsky.social #BigGardenBirdWatch a #bird photo seemed apt too! #NatureLovers #wildlifephotography #birdwatching

The image is a detailed photograph of a Common kestrel (Falco tinnunculus), perched on a dead hawthorn tree branch. The kestrel is a small bird of prey of the falcon family, slightly smaller than a pigeon. It has rich brown plumage with darker spots and bars on its back and tail feathers. It has distinctive yellow talons and a yellow cere at the base of its beak. Its feathers appear slightly ruffled in the wind. The bird is perched on the gnarled, weathered wood of a bare branch, covered with lichen. The background is a vibrant, uniform blue sky, providing a stark contrast that highlights the warm tones of the bird. The focus is sharp on the kestrel and its perch, while other branches in the foreground and background are softly blurred. Kestrels are a familiar sight in various habitats, known for their characteristic hovering behaviour while hunting for small mammals. They can often be seen perched on high points like fence posts or trees, scanning the ground for prey. The title is a nod to the book H is for Hawk by Helen Macdonald, now also a movie starring Claire Foy. The book is a memoir centred around Helen’s training of a goshawk that helped her through the grief of losing her father. Here’s the RSPB’s description of the Common Kestrel: Both males and females have pale undersides with black speckles. Males have a slate-grey head and uppertail with a single black band at the tip. Females are browner all over, with bars all along the uppertail. Both males and females have dark ‘tear’ marks extending below each eye. Wing tips are more pointed than a Sparrowhawk’s. They have a longer tail than other falcons, with a black band at the end, fanned out while hovering. The beak is yellow and black. Legs are yellow. They are between 32 and 35cm in length.
