Every season on April 15, players from all teams in Major League Baseball dawn the number 42, celebrating Jackie Robinson Day, in honor of the impact Robinson made.

In 1947, it was still the Era of "bench-jockeying." Philadelphia manager Ben Chapman admitted that before the series in Brooklyn, he had instructed his team to give it to Robinson without restraint. He said he told his players to call Robinson everything and anything they wanted to.
It was, by far, the worst behavior of any of the teams in the league.
Chapman maintained that the jockeying was not malicious, saying, “We are not making a target of Robinson. Jockeying from the bench was regular long before I was born.” (Hy Turkin, “Police Investigate Poison Pen Threats to Jackie Robinson,” New York Daily News, May 10, 1947: 25.)
However, this created much negative publicity. But also resulted in sympathy for Robinson.
Commissioner Happy Chandler ordered the Phillies to stop using racial slurs against Robinson and forced Chapman to right the wrongs. Chapman, to prove he had nothing personal against Robinson, set up a photo shoot with Robinson.
