Southern Royal Albatross

Cracking pelagic out of Eaglehawkneck last Friday (30th Jan). Super views of Shy Albatross as usual but best were 20+ WF Stormies, Grey-backed Stormie, my first ever Wilson's Storm Petrel, Fluttering Shearwater and White-chinned Petrel. Super day out. Worth the sunburn. #birding #birdingtasmania

Another "great" bird that gets around.. Great Egret (Ardea alba). Found on every continent except Antarctica. Didn't see very many in south Australia though. This was the only one I saw in Tasmania. #BirdingAustralia #BirdingTasmania #herons #egrets

Great Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo). The widest range of any cormorant, this species can be found from Greenland to Tasmania and just about everywhere in between. #BirdingTasmania #BirdingAustralia #cormorants #waterfowl

The Fossil Bay Lookout on the Tasman Peninsula is a great place to seawatch from shore. If the wind is right you can see Shy #Albatrosses, Short-tailed #Shearwaters and other #seabirds from shore. And of course lot of these.. Kelp #Gulls. #BirdingAustralia #BirdingTasmania #black&white

Pair of Kelp Gulls at Gould's Lagoon in Tasmania. The local guide told me they used to nest on this platform, but the Swamp Harriers would always come by and snatch the babies. So they don't nest in such an exposed position anymore. #BirdingAustralia #BirdingTasmania #gulls #SaturdayLaridae

Okay.. enougbh of the black & white #birds. How about some colour? Here is a Green Rosella (Platycercus caledonicus), one of 12 birds endemic to Tasmania. It is also the largest of the rosella species. #BirdingAustralia #BirdingTasmania #parrots #rosellas

One more honeyeater for today. A New Holland Honeyeater at a nectar feeder on the Tasman Peninsula. This was by far the commonest of the #honeyeaters on my trip. It was everywhere and in all kinds of different habitats. #BirdingTasmania #BirdingAustralia

Just couldn't get a decent shot of Strong-billed Honeyeater (Melithreptus validirostris) because it was so preoccupied. Digging into and stripping the Eucalyptus bark to find insects. Found only in Tasmania. #BirdingTasmania #BirdingAustralia #honeyeaters

So many flightless birds have either become extinct or are critically endangered. This one is bucking that trend. The Tasmania Native-hen (Tribonyx mortierii). Endemic to Tasmania, where it is very common. This one was taking a big bug back to the nest. #BirdingTasmania #BirdingAustralia

Australasian Shoveller (Spatula rhynchotis). The faint outline of a crescent on the face in front of the eye and the reddish on the flanks makes me think this may be an immature or eclipse male rather than a female. #BirdingTasmania #BirdingAustralia #ducks #waterfowl

Another portrait of Dusky Woodswallow (Artamus cyanopterus). The name is misleading as they are not related to swallows at all. They are in the same family as butcherbirds, currawongs and Australian magpies. #BirdingAustralia #BirdingTasmania #woodswallows

Another image of Striated Pardalote (Pardalotus striatus). During my trip I was lucky enough to see 3 of the 4 pardalote species including the endangered Forty-spotted Pardalote. But of all that I saw, this was the only one where a photo was possible. ๐Ÿ˜€ #BirdingAustralia #BirdingTasmania

Found only in Australia, #Pardalotes are a tough photo subject because (a) they are tiny, (b) they never stop moving and (c) they spend most of their time high in the leafy canopy. This Striated Pardalote (Pardalotus striatus) was more obliging than most. #BirdingAustralia #BirdingTasmania
