Hubs and I are taking our hobby to the next level by building a Birdnet-Pi bird song listening device today. #GeeksInLove #RaspberryPi #BirdNetPi #BirdWatching www.365daysofbirds.com/2025/08/20/b...

A great bittern (Botaurus stellaris) at 03:41 with a confidence level of 82%? Sure, why not. But …

We have birds! You probably _can_ run BirdNET-Pi on a Pi Zero, but it will work a _lot_ better on a Pi Model 4B. The great beauty of having done all the faffing about with the Pi Zero is that when the 4B arrived all I did, literally, was transfer the micro-SD card across, plug in the microphone, and power it up. All worked perfectly first time. And within the hour, it had detected the first bird. Nothing too remarkable (having deleted an Australian Crake on which it was 75% confident and I was 100% certain) except for the kestrel. I have occasionally seen one, but not often. I guess it was flying over. The 4B offers other advantages too. The better wifi means that it can connect from outside, which is very nice. The USB microphone needs no adapter. And it is efficient. After about 8 hours, the powerbank is still 65% full. I'm going to call it a day now and recharge the powerbank so it can go to work overnight capturing, I hope, some noctural migrants and maybe a bit of dawn chorus. This is exciting.

You probably can run BirdNET-Pi on a Pi Zero, but it will work a lot better on a Pi Model 4B.

Bei 7 Grad spüren wir Frühlingsgefühle.

Also Zeit, um den BirdNET-Pi wieder laufen zu lassen 🦆

Fell at the first. I have a Pi Zero, not a Pi Zero W2. I wonder whether my local seller is actually a shop that I can walk into, rather than only an online distributor. It would be nice if they were, but I cannot even try until Monday.

OK, let's do this.

Setting up a mobile BirdNET-Pi to eavesdrop on our feathered friends.

Surveillance as it should be.

My son has set up a #birdnetpi & linked it to BirdWeather for me. I've not got 24hrs of detections yet, but have some questions. Should I set some gain and/or use the HP and LP filters? All but one detection ( a Redwing!) are believable. Any pointers on optimising settings appreciated. #bioacoustics

If you leave your #BirdNetPi -equipped van in the airport parking lot, it mostly hears a different sort of bird.

These kinds of bird guides are usually made for places like national parks. Based on our #birdnetpi observations #CCU will be making a birdguide for our own part of the city of #Utrecht. The one below was made after our first bird workshop. A map of birds of the local mall.

Imagine my excitement: a Common Scoter detected on my #birdweather #birdnetpi system. Sounded just like one.

But no, it was a toad. It's mating season: brrp, brrp, brrp...

Moral of story: the microphone shouldn't be near a pond even if you're looking for ducks.

So, after initially having issues with #BirdNETPi it appears an updated 'model' has fixed the ID issue with local #birds as being from the Philippines, India and South America 😀
It's actually quite good, despite all the noise from the main road. Only issue so far is thinking my car was a ShelDuck!
