Happy Black History Month Day 3!
I had a different post lined up, but in light of last night's even
Born Thelma Bynem in South Carolina, Martell was the first Black female artist to release a country album, “Color Me Country.” Her song, "Color Him Father," had the highest peaking single on the Billboard Hot Country chart by a Black female country artist in the history of the genre until Beyonce’s “Texas Hold ’Em” debuted at #1 on February 21, 2024.”
Martell's album led her to become the first solo Black woman country artist to play the Grand Ole Opry.

Despite Martell’s success, fame brought her racist abuse, including racial slurs hurled at her during her shows. In 1970 she scored two Top 60 hits with “Before the Next Teardrop Falls” and “Bad Case of the Blues,” and never again appeared on the country music charts.
She stopped recording by 1974, stating that the music industry pushed her aside in favor of white singers, and that she was blacklisted by the industry. She went on to do a variety of jobs, including running a record store, being a teacher’s aide for students with learning disabilities, and as a school bus driver.

In 2021 Martell received the Equal Play Award at the Country Music Awards, which recognized her career for providing “an eternally compelling case for why the music industry must always support marginalized artists.”
(Three years later they snubbed Beyonce, though, so this seems more performative than anything.)

Martell once said of her own music, "the thing that I did in country music, nobody can ever equal."
In 2024, she posted on Instagram, “I am proud that @beyonce is exploring her country music roots. What she is doing is beautiful, and I’m honored to be a part of it.”

I had a different post lined up, but in light of last night's events, we're going to make a strong pivot. Hers is a name you may recognize from Beyonce's latest album: Linda Martell.
