Black Orpheus won the Palme d'Or at the 1959 Cannes Film Festival, the 1960 Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, the 1960 Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Film and was nominated for the 1961 BAFTA Award for Best Film.

Tonight I reveled in the glorious colors of Marcel Camus' "Orfeu Negro" on the BIG screen of San Francisco's Vogue Theater. Camus' two leading ladies (and future wives) were charming and vivacious; and dreamy Breno Mello was as romantic as Jobim's melodies.
