Current Job/Field of Study: I currently work as a Senior Underwriter for Westhab, a non-profit affordable housing development company and social services provider. After getting a Master’s Degree in Real Estate Development, I started working in the field at JLL as a Real Estate Development Associate where I was primarily underwriting market rate projects. I was always fascinated with affordable housing and wanted to learn the intricacies of how attainable housing is financed. I decided to make the switch to the affordable side early last year. My day to day involves screening potential acquisition opportunities for affordable, supportive, and transitional housing across NYC, Westchester, and Rockland Counties. I’m also involved on the project management side and oversee our projects in pre-development and various stages of construction.
Advice for Undergraduates: Don’t be afraid to reach out to professionals and companies that interest you on LinkedIn or email! Don’t go into it thinking you’re wasting someone’s time – most professionals love talking about what they do and their journey. I’ve gotten some of the best career advice, interview tips, and general real estate specific insights from people that I randomly reached out to. There are so many different career paths you can take with a planning degree. If you’re interested in a specific sector in the planning realm, find out which companies are doing the most exciting projects to you and start reaching out.
