Males have a vibrant blue back, head, and tail, with a white throat and eyebrow, and distinctive orange-red flanks. Females and juveniles are browner with a duller blue tail and orange flanks. They breed in dense, coniferous forests across northern Asia and parts of Europe, migrating to southern and southeastern Asia for the winter.
