After his arrest. Bulger told agents that his girlfriend, Catherine Greig, helped hin "control himself and his temper,' according to the report. He said he carried mace, and was only armed with guns when he traveled back to Boston on several occasions. Once, a highway patrol officer approached while Bulger was helping a couple change a flat tire in the desert, but walked away without recognizing him, according to the FBI report. Bulger confided that "one of his biggest worries" was dying in the Santa Monica apartment that he shared with Greig, leading to her arrest He said he considered arranging for a trusted person to "blow the whistle" on him and collect the $2 million reward being offered for his capture, but only if he was diagnosed with a terminal illness. Instead, Bulger was captured after a former Miss Iceland watched a news report about the manhunt for Bulger and Greig and recognized them as her former neighbors, who were living as Charlie and Carol Gasko at an apartment complex at 1012 Third St. in Santa Monica, Calif.
