Boston's Bike Network And Safer Streets Expanding To build on her commitment to create safe streets for all modes of transportation, Mayor Michelle Wu and the Boston Transportation Department (BTD) announced a 9.4 mile expansion of bike lanes providi...

"Let's finish these plans that were laid out long ago"

Yes. So long ago. So many plans. The Go Boston 2030 plan deadline is right around the corner now

And in 2022 you promised us you would commit to safer streets a #BostonGreenNewDeal. WE VOTED FOR THIS

Mayor Wu did a complete U-Turn on how she ran for office. She promised us a #BostonGreenNewDeal and mobility equity, less pollution, safer streets, faster and more reliable bus trips. And @jfh01.bsky.social delivered!

Last year she shut it all down. #WusUTurn is catastrophic for safety & climate

Wu defends 'consensus' approach to street projects following city council pushback After weeks of sharp criticism from city councilors and transit advocates over a slowdown in street infrastructure projects during her second term, Boston Mayor Michelle Wu is defending her approach, ...

Meanwhile in Boston the mayor we elected for the #BostonGreenNewDeal has paused any projects that would allow people to travel outside of cars and ripped out bus lanes

The only project she'll allow is where a young child was killed on the street

One thing I learned as a lesson from the pandemic is that whatever you can do today you must do today because there may be no opportunity tomorrow

@wutrain.bsky.social was elected to implement the #BostonGreenNewDeal and the dashboard hasn't been updated in 2 years www.boston.gov/departments/...

Depressing to see Boston making no progress when other global cities are sprinting ahead on green transportation & improving air quality

Whatever happened to the #BostonGreenNewDeal I voted for @wutrain.bsky.social ?

Gas is skyrocketing and I can't bike safely between Roxbury and Dorchester 🫠

If that's accurate, then what we are looking at is not an isolated lapse but a second-term administration that appears to be operating in open defiance of state transparency law. That should concern people regardless of where they stand on any particular street project.

Taken together β€” the staffing changes, the stalled projects, the unused funding, and the silence even in response to legally required records requests β€” the pattern becomes difficult to dismiss as coincidence. At that point the questions stop being about individual street or transit projects and start being about the administration itself.

Administrations are entitled to wide latitude in how they govern. But the public deserves to hear those priorities stated plainly.

Because if this is the new standard β€” projects halted, funding left unused, records requests ignored β€” then the administration should say so openly and explain why. Silence is not a neutral position in public governance.

It's been disappointing, and yes, as a long time supporter, even heartbreaking to see her break her campaign promises to prioritize transit and our safely with a knife through the heart of the #BostonGreenNewDeal

But the lawlessness is straight up Eric Adams-level meddling/malfeasance. Untenable πŸ‘Ž

London had been one of the most inhospitable cities for biking I had ever seen, just terrifying roads and drivers and LOOK AT THEM NOW

People yearn to move freely in their own city but that requires a safe biking network. Boston can learn & build & create #BostonGreenNewDeal @wutrain.bsky.social

Policy page from Michelle for Mayor:

Improving Bus Service

Although the MBTA is a state agency, buses run on municipal roads, so city government can play a big role in making bus service more reliable and equitable. We must speed up the design and implementation of dedicated bus lanes in our most congested corridor, expand transit signal priority, and evaluate the location and condition of bus stops

Ripping out BRT is climate denialism. I voted for the #BostonGreenNewDeal, not more street space for suburban drivers @wutrain.bsky.social

Thank you Mayor Wu! I've enjoyed your transit posts on social media since you were in city council. Enjoy your visit and congrats on your re-election

I'm excited to see what your next term brings in terms of the #BostonGreenNewDeal and safer streets

I got a text from do-nothing Marty Walsh telling me to vote for Frank "smallest and angriest man in the room" Baker, who also lost, yet now @mayorwu.boston.gov reminds me more of forgotten, ineffectual Marty Walsh on safe streets than who she was on city council, running on a #BostonGreenNewDeal 😞

This is the future of delivery in cities and Boston started a pilot in 2023 to run for a year and since then... πŸ¦—

#BostonGreenNewDeal needs to deliver on transportation decarbonization @wutrain.bsky.social @jfh01.bsky.social @ruthzee.bsky.social

The information in all these comprehensive studies can be summarized in 2 points:
1. bikes decarbonize cities even with a single trip per person taken every week
2. safety is the reason people won't use bikes

Want a #BostonGreenNewDeal? We MUST build the #BostonBikeNetwork @wutrain.bsky.social

I'm old enough to remember when @wutrain.bsky.social was running for mayor of Boston proposing a #BostonGreenNewDeal including "evaluate congestion pricing"

We know what fixes traffic: getting people out of cars

Taking on traffic
Boston has been ranked as having the worst rush-hour traffic in the country, and our transportation infrastructure has not kept pace with the growing population and number of commuters. We must take action to empower commuters with reliable, safe multimodal options and public transit, evaluate congestion pricing, and manage curbside space for pick up and drop off from ride-hailing vehicles and delivery trucks that slow traffic and block bike lanes and sidewalks when parked.

Ensuring pedestrian safety
Boston’s streets should be safe for all road users, but too often residents who have been sounding the alarm on dangerous speeding hotspots don’t see safety improvements until after a tragedy occurs. We must ensure access to traffic calming infrastructure improvements citywide, maintain crosswalks and pedestrian-friendly signal timing, and expand sidewalks during the pandemic to allow for safe distancing.

Building a safe, connected, low-stress cycling network
Boston is committed to increasing our share of commuting trips by bike to move more people on our streets and reach our climate and public health goals, but to do this, cycling must be safe and connected. We must accelerate progress in building protected cycling infrastructure with a focus on equity, so every neighborhood has access to safe cycling options.

She's since taken all these #BostonGreenNewDeal policies off her website menus but I found them inspiring. And took her seriously. Breaking trust is hard to recover

These are excellent goals and she's done great work with the #BostonSafetySurge!
