Jaime Munguia won’t rule out trilogy, but focuses on the future In the brutality of boxing, the protagonists must settle some rivalries, while others remain entangled in redemption and controversy. The story of Jaime Munguia and Bruno Surace is a tale of both, and World Boxing News has gained exclusive insight into the Mexican star’s perspective on the two fights that have defined his last year. Months after suffering the first loss of his career to Canelo Alvarez, Munguia was sent into a freefall when the unheralded Surace shocked the world by handing him a brutal KO loss. In May 2025, Munguia avenged himself with a decision win, but saw the victory marred by a failed drug test, a controversy that only recently concluded with his clearance. It is against this questioned backdrop that WBN inquired about a possible rubber match with Surace. A Difficult Journey of Growth When asked to reflect on the two fights and the controversies that surrounded them, Munguia did not shy away from the struggle. “They were difficult experiences, but also opportunities to grow,” Munguia told WBN. “The loss taught me a lot about myself and what I need to improve. The controversy was frustrating, but now that I’ve been cleared, I can move forward. Both experiences made me stronger mentally and physically.” The answers reveal a fighter who is not just seeking retribution, but also personal growth. The knockout loss and subsequent drug test controversy appear to have tempered the fighter, forcing the super middleweight star to evolve and re-evaluate a new path. Trilogy Talk Despite his recent career setbacks, there is some interest in staging a decider. When WBN asked Munguia if he believes a third fight is needed, his response uncovered a man focused on legacy rather than grudges. “If the fans want it, and it makes sense, I would definitely do it. I don’t shy away from challenges. But right now, my focus is on moving forward, taking the biggest fights available, and continuing to prove myself at the highest level.” His response is clear. The priority is not a third battle with Surace, but a continued ascent up the ladder towards another world title shot. The Future Jaime Munguia’s journey has been anything but smooth. It is a story of a viral knockout, a controversial win, and the unrelenting pressure of a public clamoring for a trilogy. But it is a journey that has clearly prepared him for the most critical phase of his career. Munguia’s response suggests that he has emerged from this ordeal as a more focused and mature fighter. Deontay Wilder, Canelo Alvarez and the curse of a trilogy When a trilogy comes calling, a fighter’s legacy is enhanced, but often it comes at a price they never quite recover from. For Deontay Wilder and Canelo Alvarez, the parallel is all too clear. Both men reached the highest of heights, only to see their aura and careers irreversibly altered in the aftermath of three brutal wars. For Wilder, Tyson Fury was the kryptonite. For Canelo, it was ex-middleweight king Gennadiy Golovkin. They went into the first bouts as seemingly invincible champions, only to come out the other side as shells of their former selves. World Boxing News looks back at all six fights and the cost Wilder and Canelo had to bear for chasing greatness. Wilder vs Fury I | The Illusion of Invincibility In December 2018, Wilder was undefeated, the self-proclaimed hardest puncher in the sport, and the WBC heavyweight ruler. Tyson Fury, returning from personal turmoil, stepped up to the plate when Anthony Joshua bailed. In an occurrence only the British contingent predicted, Fury outboxed Wilder for long stretches before suffering two knockdowns, including the unforgettable rise in the twelfth round. Judges controversially ruled the fight a draw, but Fury had sown the seeds for future battles. ‘The Gypsy King’ exposed Wilder’s technical limitations as his own confidence skyrocketed. Wilder vs Fury II | The Aura Shattered By February 2020, Wilder was still undefeated, but the second fight broke the spell. Fury mauled him from the opening bell, dropped him twice, and forced Wilder’s corner to throw in the towel in round seven. For the first time, Wilder looked vulnerable, beaten, bewildered, and publicly questioned his own team. Wilder vs Fury III | The End of the Road In October 2021, Wilder gave one last great effort. He floored Fury twice but ultimately couldn’t keep him down. Fury ended the trilogy with an emphatic 11th-round knockout. Wilder’s power still carried danger, but his aura of inevitability was gone. He’s never been the same since. Canelo vs Golovkin I | The Escape In 2017. Canelo Alvarez, boxing’s golden ticket, stepped in with Gennadiy ‘GGG’ Golovkin, the middleweight monster. The fight took place in September over twelve rounds as Golovkin exposed Canelo’s four-year reign of terror as a mere delay until he met the right opponent. On the night, most observers believed Golovkin did more than enough to win. The official result? A split draw marred by one of the most infamous scorecards in modern memory. Canelo escaped, but questions lingered. Canelo vs Golovkin II | The Risk and Reward A year later, after a failed drug test had delayed the rematch, the two met again. Canelo fought bravely in the trenches, earning a razor-thin majority decision. It was his defining victory, but the punishment he took was immense, and GGG once again had solid claims to victory. Golovkin’s heavy hands and relentless style left their mark, even in another controversial defeat. Canelo vs Golovkin III | The Hollowest Victory By the time the trilogy closed in 2022, Canelo was already carrying the wear and tear of battles at multiple weights. He won wide on the cards against an aging Golovkin, but the performance lacked sparkle. What should have been a crowning triumph instead underlined decline. Before the victory, Canelo’s loss to Dmitry Bivol confirmed how much the first two efforts had taken from his future career. The Parallel Just like Wilder, Canelo’s trilogy left scars that no tune-up, payday, or new belt could heal. Wilder was never the same punch-for-punch destroyer after Fury. Canelo was never the untouchable star after the Golovkin fight. Three fights that thrilled the world, but cost the fighters who lived them everything at the pinnacle of their careers. Wilder’s run since Fury has been horrific. Two losses from four bouts, with both defeats against top ten opponents. ‘The Bronze Bomber’ went from 40-0 going into the Fury fight to coming out the other side at 44-4-1. In contrast, Canelo has taken care of all five of his foes, barring Terence Crawford, earlier this month. However, the lack of an actual test was apparent, earning Canelo criticism he had never faced before about the caliber of his opponents. Crawford proved at 35, Canelo is firmly on the way down. The irony comes as that’s the same age as Wilder when Fury ended his world-class momentum.
