Close up of the cliff taken from a boat. The sedimentary rock has been weathered by the storms of the North Sea, differential erosion has created beautiful rounded shapes in the softer rock and left jagged pieces of harder rock sticking out from the cliff. Some of the rock has the appearance of fossilised lace draped over the cliff. The rock is 'Old Red Sandstone' and was deposited during the Middle Devonian Period (roughly 390 million years ago) before continental drift had separated the Americas from Europe and when what we know as Shetland was located South of the Equator !
