This was short and not McCellan's best IMO, but still McClellan on a bad day is probably better than many writers on their good days. I kept waiting for there to be some kind of overall big surprise about the war, but I guess that's not really what this was about. The characters were easy to like, plenty of action, some surprises. Wouldn't mind reading more in this universe, but would rather go back to his Powder Mage world for more.
