In amidst the items, is love, care, friendship, and time.
I've been so lucky to have received (and hopefully given) so many oranges this year.

We’re saddened by the loss of Liverpool poet Brian Patten (1946–2025). A legend whose words touched generations.
“One only hopes our best poems survive.”

Rest in power Brian
Really sad to hear that the uniquely gifted poet from Liverpool #BrianPatten has died. His voice and readings shaped my 1970s - seeing him many times at recitals & occasionally concerts.
RIP Brian and thank you for such wisdom and humanity.
Oh this is sad. #BrianPatten was my most favourite #poet all my life

Sad to learn of Brian Patten's death. The Mersey Sound poetry collection was one of the first books I bought for myself. I read it so many times over the years. #BrianPatten #TheMerseySound #Poetry

Just heard of the death of #BrianPatten - another voice of #Liverpool gone 😢
You ask for a poem.
And so I write you a tragedy about
How a blade of grass
Becomes more and more difficult to offer.
And how as you grow older
A blade of grass
Becomes more difficult to accept.

A wonderful poet. RIP #brianpatten
“I was one of the last children to read at my primary school. There was quite a violent, tense background at home … such claustrophobia. I just started writing to get things down, since there was no one to speak to.”

Another of the greats has passed

The text of the poem The Stolen Orange by Brian Patten: The Stolen Orange When I left I stole an orange I kept it in my pocket It felt like a warm planet Everywhere I went smelt of oranges Whenever I got into an awkward situation I'd take out the orange and smell it And immediately on even dead branches I saw The lovely and fierce orange blossom That smells so much of joy When I went out I stole an orange It was a safeguard against imagining There was nothing bright or special in the world
RIP #BrianPatten. Always loved the intensity of his poetry. Here's one my favourites (since reading it decades ago I often think of and say 'like a warm planet'): The Stolen Orange
