We talked about the notion that Megan and Cardi shouldn't talk explicitly about their own bodies but men can as evidence by the last 50 years of hip-hop. #BriteBible

This time I taught the weaponization of Judith's beauty and the critique of her weapon her own beauty using WAP. Focusing particularly on Snoop's comments about women guarding their "treasure." While his lyrics do anything but. #BriteBible #CriticalBible

Today in #BriteBible I introduced Accordance, software support for biblical languages for folk without them. We looked at how NRSV erased "son of man" from the HB/OT making it look like it was unique to Jesus and, "the young woman is pregnant" which is not "a virgin shall conceive." #CriticalBible

We discussed the violation and of the Levite's low status wife and the women and girls the final chapters of Judges in the context of a wife recently killed, dismembered and placed in a trash bag and the husband facilitated sexual abuse of Mme. Pelicot. A #BriteBible #CriticalBible

Gave my students in #BriteBible a pop quiz today: list the names of the daughters of Zelophehad. For each one they get correct they get a point back on their lowest close reading. Then we talked about the practice of not naming them individually and reasons and implications. #CriticalBible

I think I'm going to use BigXthaPlug's "Hell at Night" as an example of maledictions when I teach the Psalms. #BriteBible #CriticalBible

Today was Dead Sea Scroll day in #BriteBible. They managed most of the puzzle without borders. But, when I queue them up on Isaiah 6 in the Great Isaiah DS scroll they were able to follow. #CriticalBible

Delighted to see my students on this first day of classes for me and for many of them. The first Hebrew class went well. My introduction to interpreting the Hebrew Bible in context will be this evening. I have a 930 in person class and a 615 online class on the same days. #BriteBible is underway.

Today's "Santa, Daniel and the Zombie Apocalypse" lecture leaned much more heavily on the DC comic universe than previous iterations which were much more MCU heavy. #BriteBible #NotYourMamasSeminaryEducation #Pedagogy #CriticalBible

Yesterday in #BriteBible we talked about tithing and I explained why I called the kind of tithing virtually every church requests/requires – 10% of everything you make, usually before taxes, every year – when presented as *biblical,* "an exegetical lie."

When Gomer Looks More Like God Some men love to call women whores. Some women do too. The biblical writers use the word whore and accusations of whoring freely and freely attribute them to God. Reading a text like Hosea can easi…

Today in #BriteBible I assigned my Gomer sermon and the students really got how perspective and identity shape reading. Enjoy! wilgafney.com/2018/09/24/w... #CriticalBible

Might not be what our organizer here meant by #CriticalBible, but today in #BriteBible I taught the pornotropic texts in Ezekiel by translating his language into the contemporary "f'n community p****y." (The unsanitized version.)

Yesterday in #BriteBible I asked who are contemporary prophets.
My list has changed over the years: nuns who stand up against the death penalty every time and, Act Up and Code Pink.
I received a new answer this year: those who self immolate for a righteous cause. It was a profound response.

It's a sad but necessary outcome in my course when students get to the point where they say, "preachers have failed me." This is a man talking about the masculinist, androcentric and patriarchal presentation of the 📜 scriptures to which he has been subjected for his entire life. #BriteBible

With permission. Favorite quotes from an Intro #BriteBible student after 1st class:
<<This close reading we did was so detailed, deliberate, and inquisitive that I don’t think I can consider my past experiences with texts as “close” reading, but “medium-distanced.”>>

I love my Intro to Interpreting the HB in Context class so much. Today we talked about Christian testament exegesis of the HB & exegetical freedom, Paul's, the Rabbi's & its limits. As I was leaving, I heard my graduate assistant teaching one of the students how to make a golem. This is #BriteBible

My students are the best:
I find it pretty frustrating that Judith wasn’t a story I heard growing up. If I had to read about David collecting foreskins, I think I deserved to read about Judith. #BriteBible

#BriteBible #CriticalBible Taught Jeremiah in part through a geography based pedagogy: Where is Anathoth and what is its significance and, how does it account for Jeremiah's rejection and? Taught Ezekiel through trauma theology and Renita Weems "Battered Love" and her work on metaphors and violence.
