Don’t think about expectations "Don't write for anyone other than yourself. "Read extensively but don't think too much about expectations or markets or what is selling. "Once you give yourself to the expectations of others, you lose authenticity and you subvert your voice. "Speak your piece and do it in the way that feels true to you — and even if no one ever reads it, you will be fulfilled as an artist." Trent Lewin has been shortlisted for the Commonwealth Writers' Prize. In 2014, Lewin was a finalist for the CBC Short Story Prize for his story Saad Steps Out. More recently, he made the CBC Short Story Prize longlist in 2019, 2020 and 2021. Lewin was shortlisted for the 2025 CBC Short Story Prize.
