The current context that the current United Nations meeting on #AutonomousWeapons are taking place in demonstrate that it's time for governments to show leadership and negotiate a treaty to stop the automation of killing. Here's what happened on Day 1 of #CCWUN meeting on #KillerRobots
States could launch negotiations on an #AutonomousWeapons instrument at the November 2026 #CCWUN Review Conference.
While the CCW has seen issues in reaching consensus and efforts to undermine its work, States must withstand these challenges to achieve an urgently needed treaty.
It is encouraging and significant to the impact of a future treaty that states with varying interests in this issue can find common ground on the need to move forward on regulation. Now they must act on it – and 2026 presents a key opportunity. #CCWUN
At last week’s meeting of High Contracting Parties - four more states – 🇦🇴 🇭🇺 🇲🇿 🇭🇺 – joined a group now totalling 46 that believes the current #CCWUN text is a sufficient basis to start negotiations on an #AutonomousWeapons instrument. #CCWUN
“Achieving meaningful regulation is now possible.... Next year states must therefore consider all their options for meaningfully continuing their work by starting negotiations - and not let the progress they have made so far be wasted.”

All eyes must now turn to the remaining sessions of the GGE LAWS, where the current mandate will conclude in 2026 in advance of the #CCWUN Seventh Review Conference.

At the September meeting, #Brazil delivered a statement on behalf of 42 states, declaring their readiness to begin negotiations on an instrument.
