The Orange Pi line of single-board computers include a wide range of models featuring Arm-based chips. But while most are designed to compete in the same entry-level space as Raspberry Pi hardware, the new **Orange Pi 6 Plus **has features that make it seem more like a competitor for the Intel/Asus NUC line of mini PCs.
It measures 115 x 100mm (4.5″ x 3.9″) and features a 12-core processor with up to 45 TOPS of AI performance, support for up to 64GB of LPDDR5-5500 memory with 128-bit bandwidth, and two M.2 2280 slots with support for PCIe NVMe storage plus an M.2 2230 connector a wireless card and dual 5 Gigabit Ethernet ports.
Orange Pi hasn’t announced pricing or availability details yet, but the company has posted plenty of other details on its website.
So we know that the board features a CIX CD8180/CD8160 processor, which features:
* 4 x ARM Cortex-A720 CPU cores @ 2.8 GHz
* 4 x ARM Cortex-A720 CPU cores @ 2.4 GHz
* 4 x ARM Cortex-A520 CPU cores @ 1.8 GHz
* Arm Immortalis-G720 MC10 graphics
* 30 TOPS NPU
Orange Pi says _its_ board supports up to 45 TOPS of AI performance, but it’s unclear if that means it has a variant of the processor with a higher-performance NPU or if the company is using a combined score for CPU + GPU + NPU.
But even if you don’t care about on-device AI performance, the Orange Pi 6 Plus looks like it could be one of the most powerful single-board PCs with an Arm processor that will be available to consumers in the near future.
Its CPU and GPU should deliver better performance than most other chips on this sort of board, and there are plenty of I/O features including:
* 2 x USB 3.0 Type-C Host ports (data, video, and power)
* 2 x USB 3.0 Host ports
* 2 x USB 2.0 ports
* 1 x DisplayPort 1.4
* 1 x HDMI 1.4
* 1 x eDP
* 2 x 5 Gigabit Ethernet
* 1 x 3.5mm audio input
* 2 x speaker connectors (stereo)
* 1 x microSD card reader
* 2 x M.2 2280 M-Key (for PCIe)
* 1 x M.2 2230 E-Key (for wireless card)
* 2 x 4-lane MIPI-CSI camera interface
* Touch interface
* 1 x 40-pin header (GPIO, UART, I2C, SPI, PWM)
The board also has a 9-pin socket for an additional USB 2.0 connection, RTC, fan, and battery connectors, and 3 LED status indicator lights.
Four memory chips are soldered to the mainboard, and Orange Pi plans to offer models with 16GB, 32GB, or 64GB of total memory (4 x 4GB, 4 x 8GB, or 4 x 16GB).
According to the product page, the system will support Debian, Ubuntu, Android, and… Windows. Given that Microsoft hasn’t released desktop versions of Windows for any computers with Arm processors _not_ made by Qualcomm yet, I suspect that means it supports Windows IoT rather than Windows 11 Home or Pro. But there have been rumors (for years) that Microsoft’s exclusivity deal with Qualcomm will end soon, so who knows?
Anyway, with a high-performance processor, plenty of AI capabilities, and all that I/O, this board appears to be in a whole different class than most Raspberry Pi or Orange Pi computers. It’ll also be in a whole different class when it comes to power consumption though – it’s designed to work with a 100W USB Type-C power supply.
