Exciting project by Paul Hutton at Tetratech to extend CALSIM period back to 1872 using data from DWR's 1930 Bulletin 5 and tree ring reconstruction data. #CWEMF 2021
I asked if @CA_DWR could provide disaggregated validation info for wet, normal, dry, and critically dry years. Hongbin said no. This was the Colusa Basin Drain water that was created by the CALSIM II model. Important to know how much the water balance has improved. #CWEMF
Hongbing Yin's slide on CALSIM III model validation at #CWEMF. The values look reasonable but there were major known problems with the Sacramento Valley water balance in dry and critically dry years in CALSIM II, which the aggregated validation would not show. #CAwater
Francis Chung, @CA_DWR Bay-Delta modeling chief , warned in a 2010 #CWEMF meeting, "The relative frequency of dead storage conditions in upstream reservoirs indicate that significantly modified operations will be required with climate changed conditions." https://bit.ly/3uHJFE4
At #CWEMF, DWR's engineers are reporting the ability to do parallel runs of WEAP model scenarios in the cloud. One of my advisors at UC Santa Cruz used cloud computing to assemble the human genome sequence in 2000. We need to fund more model development for #CAwater.
The discussion lead by @JayLund113 of the Delta ISB's water reliability review at #CWEMF is deep and fascinating. These discussions inspired by the Delta ISB's reviews are profoundly important for adaptation to climate change. #Deltascience
