British Columbia’s first-ever Taiga Bean Geese (middendorffii) gave fabalis views in Port Renfrew yesterday. Hot on the heels of Canada’s first Taiga Flycatcher, they continue this winter’s run of Taiga vagrants in the province. #CanadianBirding

Calm seas yesterday enabled a seabird survey by boat in the Haro Strait. A few hundred Ancient Murrelets proved very enjoyable! #CanadianBirding
Female American Wigeon. King’s Pond, Capital, British Columbia. 16 January 2026.
While the head pattern of a male American Wigeon is striking, females are arguably more worthy of attention, especially when forming a search image in the context of vagrancy #CanadianBirding

California Scrub-Jay has a tenuous foothold in Canada, occurring only in southern British Columbia, where it was first confirmed breeding in 2014. After some searching, I was pleased to see a pair in Vancouver yesterday. #CanadianBirding

A juvenile Bald Eagle is not so "bald". The young have a brown head and eyes, unlike the white head and golden yellow eyes of the adult. The outstretched wings are cropped in this photo to give a better view of the head, feet and feathers.

A great egret looking for snacks in what is left of Mud Lake…the heatwave this summer has made it more of a Mud Puddle. Still, it managed to grab several minnows while I watched. Fuel for the inevitable flight south.

A side portrait of a female sooty grouse.
A female sooty grouse, June 2025.
She was foraging among the tall grass and flowers at the lookout halfway up Mt Seymour just a few metres from the parking lot.
I was struck by the variety of plumage on the head, and the bright yellow ridge above the eye.

A Pacific wren sits on some moist moss next to a stream.
I found this Pacific wren on a very hot (for us) day. It was breathing hard and had found a spot next to a stream to cool down.
