A large brown and withered head of a sunflower, now devoid of its once vibrant yellow ray florets, lies in a brush pile where its black and white striped seeds have become a food source for the birds in the neighbourhood. The discarded shells lay on the ground

Pollen for the bees
Seeds for the birds

A monarch butterfly hangs with her orange, black, and white wings closed. Behind her, the changing monarch chrysalis (it is becoming bluish as the wings inside become more visible)

A new butterfly warms its wings in the sunlight on my fingertip as I try to release her in my back garden

A slender stalk of sunflowers, damaged by birds foraging for seeds, stands next to a New England aster that is not yet blooming. False sunflowers grow in a tangle behind a bushy mound of black-eyed Susans.

One last stalk of sunflowers

While some of the flowers in the garden have faded

Most are still vibrantly blooming

And a few have yet to burst forth

Summer may be almost over yet life in our gardens continues to flourish

A close shot of the disk florets of a yellow sunflower; the ray florets fill the rest of the picture

I've lived near sunflowers all my life yet I've never looked so closely at one still growing until today

Sent an email to my Burlington, Ontario councilor suggesting the city make more community gardens available. There are plenty of municipal patches under lawn - green concrete.

Tiny gardens can produce vegetables.

May you would like to do the same
