Just don't go introducing one species to control another invasive species in case the first species also becomes invasive, amd ends up being a bigger problem. #canetoads, #Queensland

Tonight our teenage daughter asked if we could rewatch the old Cane Toad documentary, An Unnatural History. We’d played it for her when she was much younger and it had stuck with her. It’s still a cracker documentary, in equal measures informative and alarming and hilarious. One of the best […]

RE: the “I run over Cane Toads with my car” sentiments disturbed director Mark Lewis so much that he instead recreated the act using large potatoes placed in the road that with some cleaver camerawork looked like someone running over the Cane Toads

@eliotetc.bsky.social I'm sure it's been said by a million others but cane toads aren't native to Australia, it was introduced here in 1935 to kill the native Cane Beetle.

Always glad to see one of my resident #greentreefrogs at my place in #Laidley. ❤️❤️

Because I also presently have a lot of the introduced #canetoads on my property, which are a pest.

This one tonight decided to climb up my security grill door, after rain this afternoon. 😄😄

Walter Froggatt opposed the importation of #CaneToads, warning of eco-disaster and doubting the effectiveness in beetle control.

Despite his concerns being dismissed and a potential namesake bias, Froggatt was validated in one of the most infamous #ecological missteps in #AustralianHistory.

#CaneToads were introduced to Queensland, #Australia in 1935 in an unsuccessful attempt to control beetle populations.

Since then, they have become a pest, wreaking havoc on native #wildlife. Genetic engineering is considered one of the most promising methods for managing their numbers.
