Pale Brindled Beauty (Phigalia pilosaria)

Pale Brindled Beauty (Phigalia pilosaria)

Put the garden trap out for 1st time in a few weeks. Low expectations despite the mild conditions. Amazed to catch a Pale Brindled Beauty, the first time I've seen this moth before the new year.

5 species in total including my first December record of Double-striped Pug.

Yesterday morning, after an overnight low of -1.7C, a female Palpita vitrealis on our garden olive tree, spotted by my daughter. Not something I was expecting to see after the recent frosts! Perhaps they can survive the winter now, even in Wales?

Currant Clearwing out in numbers already - six to the TIP lure in just a couple of minutes at the allotment this afternoon, in nice muggy weather.

Pine Beauty! Always a delight and I don't see them every year; this is only my 4th in the garden.

Also new for the year were Least Black Arches and a bunch of micros: Alucita hexadactyla, Epinotia immundana, Elachista canapennella & Caloptilia rufipennella.

A Nut-tree Tussock (Colocasia coryli) in the moth trap on 27th March was my earliest garden record by 10 days.

Well this isn't a photo I ever expected to be able to take - not one but two Acleris literana in the garden trap last night. I've only ever seen this oak-feeding species 4 or 5 times before, and all were singletons. And just one previous garden record in 18 years.

Lovely couple of hours in local oak-birch woodland last night, 11 moth species recorded. Highlights 7 Yellow Horned, Shoulder Stripe & a handsome striped form of Oak Nycteoline. March Moth top scorer with 12.
