Former Care Home Manager Found to Have Abused Children Over Nearly Two Decades A court has determined that Malcolm Phillips, a former manager of Skircoat Lodge Care Home in Halifax, sexually abused vulnerable children over an 18-year period between 1976 and 1994. Now aged 93 and deemed unfit to stand trial, Phillips was subject to a trial-of-facts at Bradford Crown Court, a legal process used to establish whether the alleged acts occurred when a defendant cannot participate in a conventional trial. Although such proceedings do not result in a formal conviction, the jury concluded that Phillips committed multiple serious sexual offences against four girls and two boys in his care. Prosecutors described how Phillips exploited his authority and direct access to children, living in accommodation connected to the girls’ bedrooms. He was said to have created an atmosphere of intimidation and control, selecting victims by reviewing their personal files to identify those most vulnerable to manipulation. The court heard that children who attempted to report abuse or run away were dismissed as troublemakers and returned to the home, allowing the abuse to continue largely unreported for nearly two decades. Linda Brunning, Phillips’ assistant, was found guilty of aiding and abetting several of the offences, as well as committing indecent assault herself. The prosecution portrayed her as complicit in maintaining strict control over the home and, in some cases, directly facilitating abuse. She has been remanded in custody and is expected to receive a custodial sentence. Skircoat Lodge closed in 1996, two years after Phillips was suspended. He had previously been jailed in 2001 for sexual offences involving other residents. The court will now consider limited legal options available under a trial-of-facts procedure, including possible hospital or supervision orders.
