Image of the Andromeda Galaxy (Messier 31/M31), our closest neighboring galaxy at 2.5 million light years away. It appears here tilted diagonally from upper left to lower right, in a vast field dense with stars of different colors. Near the galactic core are two noticeably bright spots: M110 to the lower left and M32 to the right, two of the 35 smaller satellite galaxies orbiting Andromeda. Data taken from the Amateur Astronomers Association’s Gateway Remote Telescope program. Processed by me in Siril, GIMP, and Snapseed.

Today would have been Carl Sagan's 91st birthday. He brought the wonder of the universe to the masses through his books and the Cosmos documentary series. Reading his novel Contact was a formative experience for me (tho the film could've been more accurate).

An illustrated image of Carl Sagan with a quote overlayed about the ethical treatment of animals. The quote reads: "Humans who enslave, castrate, experiment on, and fillet other animals – have had an understandable penchant for pretending animals do not feel pain. A sharp distinction between humans and 'animals' is essential if we are to bend them to our will, make them work for us, wear them, eat them – without any disquieting tinges of guilt or regret. It is unseemly of us, who often behave so unfeelingly toward other animals, to contend that only humans can suffer. The behavior of other animals renders such pretensions specious. They are just too much like us." The background includes birds in flight and a subtle celestial sky, emphasising Sagan's connection to the cosmos and his contemplative stance on empathy and the moral implications of humanity's treatment of animals.
🌌✨ Happy Carl Sagan Day! 🌟📚 Let's celebrate the legacy of a visionary who inspired us to explore the cosmos and embrace the wonders of science! 🪐🔭 Let’s honor his impact on humanity’s understanding of the universe! 🚀🌍 #CarlSaganDay #Cosmos

On Nov. 15 2026, #Voyager 1 will then be 1-light-day's distance from home. Fucking slacker, that #Voyager1-- had it stepped up the pace just a little, it could have hit 1-light-day on #CarlSaganDay (Nov. 9). #CarlSagan
49 years just to go 1 light-day.

Image of the Earth as seen from the Moon. Text reads: "We on Earth have just awakened to the great oceans of space and time from which we have emerged. We are the legacy of 15 billion years of cosmic evolution. We have a choice: We can enhance life and come to know the universe that made us, or we can squander our 15 billion-year heritage in meaningless self-destruction. What happens in the first second of the next cosmic year depends on what we do, here and now, with our intelligence and our knowledge of the cosmos. - Carl Sagan"

I miss that man. I really need to buy the original Cosmos series on DVD as it is no longer streaming anywhere. Because of course.
