The bed dips beside her and a heavy arm drapes over her shoulders. She draws in a long, slow breath and sits upright, resting her head on Bob’s shoulder and listening to the steady droning of the shower behind her. “I’m scared,” Ashe whispers. Bob holds her a little tighter. “I’m scared for Cass. I’m scared that everyone we left behind is dead. I’m scared we’re going to be stuck here forever.” Bob rests his head on hers. “I don’t know what to do.” She swallows a sob. She needs to be strong. Cole is in a place she’s never seen him. She doesn’t know how to help him through it. She doesn’t know if she can help him through it, or if he even wants help.

Cass murmurs, a surprisingly gentle tone in his voice. “Could talk about birds.” Ashe scoffs a laugh. “Birds? You a bird guy?” “I like ‘em. Wanna get a parrot of some kind as a pet, one you need a licence for. Y'know, a little guy who puffs up when you spray ‘em with water, wanting to get their underfluffies all wet.”
“I just don't want you to be uncomfortable is all,” he says quietly, a slight blush in his cheeks. It's endearing. He's endearing. She can't help but think about reaching out, cupping his face, waiting until he meets her gaze and offering a soft, encouraging smile. She can't remember the last time Cole showed vulnerability like this. “Well,” Ashe says, feeling the twitch of her fingers. “I can confirm a little guy who puffs up to get his underfluffies all wet is adorable.”

She takes a deep, shaky breath, looking him in the eye. “Do you miss it? This? Us?” Cole smiles wistfully, he pulls her into a hug. She breathes in his smell, stale smoke and desert sand and his natural smell and it hasn’t changed since the last time he held her like this twenty years ago. “More than I thought I ever would,” he whispers.

“Missed you,” Cole says quietly, lips fluttering against her skin. He doesn’t say any more, not as he rests his forehead against her temple, nose and lips brushing against her cheek. “Missed you too,” she whispers, feeling a flutter of sorrow from her heart. She wanted to hear that from him when their paths crossed after he left. He never did. Not until now, that is. “Sorry I left.” Ashe closes her eyes, squeezes them so tight she sees stars. She wants to let the words settle over her, envelop her like a warm bath but she can’t give herself hope after this long; hope that he will stay in her life when this little mission is done. Because he’ll likely fuck off like he did every other time and she has to protect herself from that. She can’t go through that again.
