Painted early in American artist Mary Cassatt’s career, this portrait tests how an artist can register place without turning a person into a costume. A window ledge becomes a threshold that’s public-facing, yet protective like an invitation to look that still leaves control with the unidentified young woman. She leans forward on a stone window sill, her forearms crossed and her hands resting lightly one over the other. She faces us with her head tipped slightly to her left, holding a steady, quiet gaze. Her complexion is warm olive in the golden light, with a soft blush across her cheeks while dark brows frame brown eyes that catch a small highlight. Her black hair is swept back, but a loose curl traces her temple. Two deep red roses with green leaves, tucked behind her right ear, punctuate the darkness around her head. A dangling, silver earring glints at one ear, but the other is half-lost in shadow. She wears a red-and-white striped shawl that pools in broad folds, opening at the neck to reveal collarbones and the pale V of her chest. On her left arm, a patterned sleeve of white with yellow and gray accents billows outward, edged by a dark ruffle that echoes the curve of her elbow. The background is nearly black, so her face and the saturated reds feel close and immediate. Cassatt’s paint is tactile as creamy highlights model the forehead and nose, quick strokes sketch the shawl’s weave, and softer, smoky transitions dissolve the edges into the night. Her lips are softly parted, the lower lip catching light like a small ember. The angled sill and her folded arms create a gentle barrier while the dark field behind her isolates the moment, as if time has slowed at the window. Red roses and a vivid red wrap nod to “Spain,” but her expression stays unromanticized and self-possessed. Cassatt’s hard contrast of light against a dark background pulls attention to what remains unnamed … the woman’s identity and story … while insisting on the dignity of her pause.

It was the 1870s, and Paris was the center of the art world — a place ruled entirely by men. Women weren’t allowed to attend life-drawing classes with nude models, weren’t taken seriously by galleries, and were told to stick to “domestic subjects.” Cassatt, a banker’s daughter from Pennsylvania, didn’t listen. She crossed an ocean, burned through her savings, and vowed to prove them wrong.
Mary Cassatt once stormed out of a Paris gallery, furious — not because her work was rejected, but because it was dismissed as “too feminine to matter.”

"Summertime" by Mary Cassatt, painted around 1894, is an Impressionist work depicting a serene summer scene. It features two figures, a woman and a young girl, in a boat, gazing at ducks on the water. The painting's loose brushstrokes and bright palette capture the light and movement of the scene. Cassatt uses an exaggerated perspective to show the water's reflections and ripples. The close proximity of the figures suggests a devoted relationship, fostering a warm and emotional response from the viewer. The painting is known for its tranquil mood, inviting reflection on the simple pleasures of nature. The painting was created in 1894 when Mary Cassatt had purchased the Château de Beaufresne, northwest of Paris. This work marks her return to easel painting after four years, during which time she focused on printmaking and created her mural, "Modern Woman".

"Young Mother Sewing" is an oil painting by American Impressionist artist Mary Cassatt, created in 1900. It depicts a mother sewing while her young child leans against her. The painting is set in the conservatory of Cassatt's home in France. Look at that little child that has just thrown herself against her mother’s knee, regardless of the result and oblivious to the fact that she could disturb ‘her mamma.’ And she is quite right, she does not disturb her mother. Mamma simply draws back a bit and continues to sew. - Louisine Havemayer Mary Cassatt was the only American painter who exhibited with the Impressionists. Although she never married or had children of her own, she is best known for her delicate portrayals of motherhood. Her paintings seek to break traditional barriers in art and emphasize the vital role of women as the primary caretakers of children.

Here's some more juicy details about Mary Cassatt: even from Paris she was a suffragette! Lots of correspondence, and she helped BFF and art maven Louisine Havemeyer put together a benefit sale of her and Degas' work. (Havemeyer actually spent a night in jail for her activism)
