#OnThisDay - 1 April 1857, William Wire was born.
A clockmaker and zealous antiquarian, he is commemorated on a plaque in #CastlePark. For 25 years the bulk of the coins, urns and #Roman remains found in #Colchester passed through his hands and were documented in his diary.

#OnThisDay - 24 January 1864, Captain, Sir Herbert Scarisbrick Naylor-Leyand, MP for #Colchester (1892-5), was born. A plaque on the Grade ll listed Rye Gate entrance to #CastlePark commemorates his presentation of the gates to the town.

Lisle and Lucas - the two friends - were buried together in the North Aisle of #StGiles Church. After the restoration their tomb was marked by a plaque.
The site of their execution is today marked by an obilisk erected when #CastlePark opened in 1892.
