Heavenly choir - a little legend for you.

Newcastle artist Ralph Hedley carved the outstanding woodwork of the quire for @nclcathedral's inauguration in 1882.

Perhaps, most of all, it is the #CathedralAngels on high who dominate.

We're in Saint Mary's Cathedral, #Limerick today for our #CathedralAngels.

This angel has presided over events in the Cathedral for over a century.

It is one of a pair and forms part of the reredos of the Great High Altar.

'most dreary'. That's what Queen Victoria said. (A bit harsh I think).

#CathedralAngels

During a visit to @stpaulscathedral.bsky.social, Queen Victoria remarked that it was ...

‘most dreary, dingy & undevotional’

A comment that would lead to a scheme of ceiling mosaics being installed.

Wow. An army of angels.

Wow. An army of angels.

Wow. An army of angels.

We couldn't possibly run a #CathedralAngels campaign without including the window of St Michael leading his army of angels which was made by Clayton & Bell and installed in Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford in 1875.

It’s by far the largest window in the cathedral.

Most of the fragments were recovered from Cuthbert’s tomb when it was opened in 1827, you can see at the ‘head’ end of St Cuthbert’s coffin carved figures of the Archangels Gabriel and Michael.

It's old. Very old.

Now displayed in @mancathedral.bsky.social’s Nave, the Angel Stone is one of the Cathedral’s oldest artefacts.

It is believed to date back to the 11th or 12th Century.

I’d love to include the other Sheffield one and Liverpool. But it’s a membership ‘thing’ though we do have ‘partner’ cathedrals in Ireland and Wales. You’ll see them in our #CathedralAngels winter campaign.

Did you know ...

@carlislecathedral.bsky.social is famous for its starry ceiling, but did you know this beautiful decoration also incorporates angels, added in the 1850s?

Read about them below. Also a nasty accident >
