This is what happens when you knock down a fence before understanding why it was built.

Jim Mackey, the new transformation CEO of NHS England, is gripping NHS finances and putting an end to the deficit-by-default culture that has consumed our health service. And Penny Dash, the new Chair of NHS England, has identified hundreds of bodies cluttering the patient safety and regulatory landscape, leaving patients and staff alike lost in a labyrinth of paperwork and frustration. Change is hard. And with far more change to come, I know there will be cautious voices warning us to slow down. But we inherited an NHS going through the worst crisis in its history. There’s no time to waste. Labour will never duck the hard work of reform. We will take on vested interests so that the NHS can be there for you when you need it, once again.
‘These “hundreds of bodies cluttering the patient safety and regulatory landscape”. Are they in the room with us?’

This is what happens when you just cut things without asking what they were meant to do. #ChestertonsFence anyone? youtu.be/qPGbl2gxGqI?...

Thanks for this.
While not as pithy as the article you posted, I found this one 3 or 4 years ago and have re-read it a few times.
It helps provide a bit perspective when I get into "burn it all down mode" on some of my projects. Or, conversely, when I see myself being curmudgeonly […]
Much has changed in IT since I started, but one constant lingers - the arrogance of young programmers and their belief that existing systems are 'bad'.
Antiquated maybe, but not bad. The original designers weren't stupid, just limited by tech of that time.

#ChestertonsFence this principle never fails to be correct.
Have you heard of #ChestertonsFence ?
This principle is so relevant right now in the Musk job cuts: Don’t remove the fence til you fully understand why it was there in the first place.
#ChestertonsFence … look it up. This principle is so relevant right now.

#ChestertonsFence says don’t remove or change until you understand why the fence was there in the first place. This principle fully applies here.
Never knock down a fence before you understand why it was built.

"Oh, so that's why that fence was there."

Is old technology always bad? Chesterton´s fence and being proud of what you have. kristoferhallen.com/posts/cheste...
Should think about what "Software development according to Chesterton" would look like. Any proposals?

Some of the rules may have been written with a reason. E.g. fire code, not to put too fine a point on it. #chestertonsFence
