Sexes are similar, while juveniles are uniformly pale brown without the dark head. This gregarious bird is found throughout Southeast Asia, frequenting open grasslands and cultivated areas, especially rice paddies. They feed mainly on grains and seeds and build large, dome-shaped nests in bushes or tall grass, laying 4-7 white eggs. At least ten subspecies are recognised.
