1999, while reading Mr. Nice and working on asbestos abatement at the Sears on State Street, I came across the name of Howard Mark’s gang in London. I was searching for a name for our Welsh society, and thus "The Chicago Tafia" was born. The name also nods to Murray Humphreys.

Daniel Protheroe (5 November 1866 – 25 February 1934), was a Welsh composer and conductor, born in Cwmgiedd, Wales.

In Chicago he conducted various choirs, taught at the Sherwood Music School, and mentored Rhys Morgan ("The Welsh Tenor" 1892–1961).

Daniel Protheroe was a Welsh composer and conductor who immigrated to to Scranton, Pennsylvania, at age 19 and became one of the most popular Welsh musicians in America and Wales. He later lived and worked in Milwaukee & Chicago, where he conducted choirs & composed many hymns.

The groundbreaking ceremony was held on March 1, 1958. A cornerstone of gray Cambrian limestone, shipped from Saint David’s Cathedral in Wales, was laid and sealed on the eve of Saint David’s Day, February 28, 1959.
