Some 40 years later, a Tennessee science teacher was fired for violating the law. The teacher sued and was re-hired, but he continued the fight to have the legislation repealed. And it was, in 1967.

On this day in 1925, the state of Tennessee passed a law prohibiting the teaching of human evolution in schools. This was - unsuccessfully - challenged in the Scopes Monkey Trial the next year.
