Pope #ClementVII took refuge in Castel Sant'Angelo after the Swiss Guard were slain, where he remained until a ransom was paid to the rampant pillagers. The #SackOfRome is seen as the end of the #Renaissance. #Cellini gives a vivid account of it in his superb autobiography.
