Devils Tower, 2009. That summer was all about climbing. A 7-week road trip across the US, chasing granite and cracks, sleeping in campgrounds or wherever we could find space. Photography was more of a side project back then — I had my first DSLR with me, but most of the time I only took it out after the climbs were done. Or before. I had no real knowledge of technique or editing, but I was starting to pay attention — to light, to composition, to the moments that linger after the adrenaline fades. Climbing Devils Tower was a dream. The approach through the pine forest, the sudden view of this massive volcanic plug rising from the plains — and then the routes, classic and exposed, full of history and texture. We topped out and we were alone on the summit for a moment. This photo came later, during a quiet walk near the base, when the clouds were just right.
