Luis Ortiz Monasterio was born in Mexico City on August 23, 1906. Sculptor and teacher. He studied at the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes (1921–24) under Ignacio Asúnsolo. He visited California between 1924 and 1926, where he encountered contemporary trends. On returning to Mexico in 1931 he was appointed to teach ‘talla directa’, sculpting directly in stone, at the Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas, continuing until 1962. His creative ability and originality are best seen in his more personal creations. In the 1930s he produced sensual stone sculptures such as La Victoria, 1935; by 1943 he was incorporating colour into his designs. He produced a number of polychromed terracotta sculptures, including Maternidad. He also executed some important public monuments, including the fountain of Nezahualcoyotl (1956) in Chapultepec, Mexico City; the sculptures (1962) in the Unidad Habitacional Independencia, Mexico City; and a sculpture (1963) in the National Medical Centre, Mexico City, in which he dealt with historical themes. Ortiz Monasterio maintained a constant interest in using diverse materials and in pursuing new forms of expression; he expressed nationalist sentiments through his use of Pre-Columbian sources. In the 1960s he preferred polychromed concrete and bronze in his personal work and adopted an almost abstract geometric approach. He died in Mexico City on February 16, 1990.

Devils Tower, 2009. That summer was all about climbing. A 7-week road trip across the US, chasing granite and cracks, sleeping in campgrounds or wherever we could find space. Photography was more of a side project back then — I had my first DSLR with me, but most of the time I only took it out after the climbs were done. Or before. I had no real knowledge of technique or editing, but I was starting to pay attention — to light, to composition, to the moments that linger after the adrenaline fades. Climbing Devils Tower was a dream. The approach through the pine forest, the sudden view of this massive volcanic plug rising from the plains — and then the routes, classic and exposed, full of history and texture. We topped out and we were alone on the summit for a moment. This photo came later, during a quiet walk near the base, when the clouds were just right.

A fantastical, otherworldly scene unfolds beneath a sky alive with color and motion. High above jagged twisting volcanic rock formations, a massive spire of dark, organic-looking stone twists upward, its surface riddled with deep hollows and textures like cooled magma. A narrow staircase spirals around the spire’s dizzying height, leading to the summit, where an immense statue of the Eternal Goddess Xolaria dominates the scene. She towers in gleaming, otherworldly armor, crowned with horns, her form both protective and terrifying, illuminated from behind by radiant light that spills outward like a divine aura. Before her stands a vast ceremonial basin, suggesting ritual purpose or cosmic offering. The night sky behind her is alive with a shimmering aurora that washes the heavens in greens, purples, and blues, like a celestial curtain in motion. Cutting across this aurora is the faint but unmistakable arc of a mysterious space ring, glowing as it stretches from horizon to horizon—an ancient and incomprehensible structure encircling the world. Closer to the viewer, a small flock of Rendaraian bats swoops through the sky. Their leathery wings are spread wide, and their long, prehensile tails curl and twist as they fly toward the foreground, lending a sense of eerie vitality to the surreal landscape. In the lower distance, smaller spires of volcanic rock rise through mist and shadow, framing the monumental climb up treacherous carved rock staircase that spirals around the spire to the chalice of the goddess. The overall impression is vast, reverent, and unsettling: a vision of divine presence, cosmic wonder, and alien grandeur within the Children of Gaia universe.
I think my illustration of the Chalice of Xolaria from the epic sci-fi/fantasy series: Children of Gaia is finished.

This striking aerial photograph captures the raw, elemental beauty of Kapalua’s rocky coastline from directly above. The image showcases the dramatic interaction between the emerald-green Pacific waters and Hawaii’s characteristic volcanic shore in stunning detail. The composition is dominated by the foaming white surf that creates a dynamic border between the deep turquoise ocean and the rugged coastline. Waves crash against the dark volcanic rocks, creating intricate patterns of white foam and spray that contrast beautifully with the rich greens and blues of the water. The shoreline itself tells the geological story of Hawaii - composed of weathered volcanic rock in various shades of black, gray, and rust-brown, interspersed with patches of golden sand and smaller pebbles. Tide pools filled with crystal-clear water reveal the ocean’s constant sculpting work on the landscape, creating natural basins and channels carved into the ancient lava rock. The aerial perspective reveals textures and patterns invisible from ground level - the way water swirls around rocky outcroppings, the intricate network of cracks and crevices in the volcanic stone, and the mesmerizing dance of foam as each wave retreats and advances. This bird’s-eye view perfectly captures the primal beauty of Hawaii’s coastline, where millions of years of volcanic activity meet the relentless power of the Pacific, creating a landscape that’s both harsh and breathtakingly beautiful.

A monochrome photograph of a volcanic coastline in Iceland. Jagged basalt formations rise from a black pebble beach, their sharp, dark surfaces glistening with seawater. In the midground, a powerful wave crashes into a smaller outcrop, sending a plume of white spray into the overcast sky. Behind it, a tall, solitary stack looms, anchoring the composition. The water swirls between the rocks, streaked with foam, creating a stark contrast between the solidity of the stone and the motion of the sea.
