The design employs his 'onix negro' and 'mosaico azteca' inlay techniques to form two opposing 'hands'. One hand is primarily black onyx with a circle of azurmalachite inlay in the palm, and the other hand is the reverse primarily azurmalachite with a circle of onyx in the palm. The size, the brilliant color, the striking surrealist hand design, the rarity of this design. It's a masterpiece from his final few years! Materials: bronze, onyx, azurmalachite mosaic inlay The only example of this design that I have seen. Chato was greatly influenced by the modern art movements of his time including cubism and surrealism, and this design shows his fascination with the human hand. Marked "Los Castillo Taxco" and design number "11" at back.

A super rare one of a kind vintage 1950s handmade two-tone 14K white and yellow gold and lavender jade geometric Mexican modernist cross design necklace by Enrique Ledesma of Taxco. Incredibly rare and no doubt unique, entirely handmade, and an outstanding example of the modernist design of Ledesma! I've only seen a couple other pieces of gold jewelry by Ledesma in my 45+ year career, and this is by far the best of the bunch! The lavender jade is natural untreated jadeite jade of the highest quality and color! Ledesma studied painting and sculpture before starting his career in Taxco working for Spratling at Las Delicias, Los Castillo, and Hector Aguilar before opening his own workshop in the early 1950s. The pendant measures 2-3/4" long by 1-3/8" wide, and it weighs 8.8 grams total. The lavender jade stone at center measures 1-1/2" long by 1/2" wide, and is of exceptional quality and very unusual shape and size! The pendant is marked "Ledesma 14K" on the bail as shown in my photos. I've matched the pendant by Ledesma with an American 14k gold neckring from the same period. The neckring measures 4" by 4-1/4" inner diameters when closed, but can be worn open when it will fit up to a 17" neck. The 14k yellow gold neckring weighs 9.6 grams total, and is marked "14K". Excellent vintage condition.

Luis Ortiz Monasterio was born in Mexico City on August 23, 1906. Sculptor and teacher. He studied at the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes (1921–24) under Ignacio Asúnsolo. He visited California between 1924 and 1926, where he encountered contemporary trends. On returning to Mexico in 1931 he was appointed to teach ‘talla directa’, sculpting directly in stone, at the Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas, continuing until 1962. His creative ability and originality are best seen in his more personal creations. In the 1930s he produced sensual stone sculptures such as La Victoria, 1935; by 1943 he was incorporating colour into his designs. He produced a number of polychromed terracotta sculptures, including Maternidad. He also executed some important public monuments, including the fountain of Nezahualcoyotl (1956) in Chapultepec, Mexico City; the sculptures (1962) in the Unidad Habitacional Independencia, Mexico City; and a sculpture (1963) in the National Medical Centre, Mexico City, in which he dealt with historical themes. Ortiz Monasterio maintained a constant interest in using diverse materials and in pursuing new forms of expression; he expressed nationalist sentiments through his use of Pre-Columbian sources. In the 1960s he preferred polychromed concrete and bronze in his personal work and adopted an almost abstract geometric approach. He died in Mexico City on February 16, 1990.

An iconic vintage 1950s handmade mixed metals sterling and brass on ebonized wood Mexican modernist Last Supper wall-sculpture artwork by the Talleres Monasticos of Cuernavaca Mexico, also known as Emaus and the Benedictine Monks of Cuernavaca. Designed by Ernesto Paulsen Camba (1925-2006) who was a Mexican modernist sculptor/architect/designer, and who provided designs for the Emaus workshop in the 1950s. His architectural and design work was a major part of the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, and he was a contemporary of Clara Porset, Van Beuren and Shoemaker, among others. Probably the most iconic and desirable version of the Last Supper made by the Talleres Monasticos, and especially given the great condition! The sterling and brass pieces are raised above the black wood base in the technique called 'metales divorciados' (divorced metals) first developed by Chato Castillo of Los Castillo in Taxco in the 1940s. The Emaus workshop sold their work through the Los Castillo shop in Taxco, and also in the Sanborn's department store in Mexico City. Measures 17.75" across by 6" high at front by 1" thick, and has the hanging apparatus at back as shown. Has both the sterling silver plaque at back with complete markings for the Talkers Monasticos including "Sterling Talleres Monasticos" and the Eagle 1 mark that means that this item was tested by the Mexican government for sterling content in Mexico City, and also the paper labels that are usually missing as they were only glued on at back. The applied design at front is primarily sterling silver with two additional pieces of brass, and has some tarnish as shown which can be easily polished away if you desire to do so. Excellent vintage condition.

A rare vintage 1940s handmade sterling silver Mexican modernist geometric design link bracelet by Los Castillo in Taxco. A striking early modernist design by Los Castillo, and possibly designed by either Chato or Antonio Castillo. Entirely handmade of weighty solid sterling silver with cut-out opposing L-shaped designs along the length. Measures 6.75" wearable length but the links are curved so the bracelet will actually fit up to about a 7" to 7.25" wrist. (I can fit it on my 7.5" wrist, but it's tight.) Measures 1" wide. The bracelet weighs a super heavy 90 grams total. Marked at back with the 1940s Los Castillo marks, "Los Castillo Taxco Sterling Made in Mexico" and design number "360". A hard to find, and super attractive modern bracelet that will no doubt last another 80s years at least! Still has the original safety chain as shown. I've only seen a couple other examples of this design in my 45+ year career, and they were smaller and lighter than this one! Excellent vintage condition.

A super rare vintage 1950s handmade 'metales casados' (married metals) sterling silver brass and black onyx inlay Mexican modernist Face design letter opener/knife designed by Stella Popowski in Taxco. Popowski was a Polish jewish emigre who fled the Nazis in Europe to Cuba in the late 1930s with her parents and siblings. After the war, she studied art in Paris. She lived and worked in Taxco in the 1950s to early 1960s and designed jewelry for Los Castillo, Antonio Pineda, and later for herself in her own studio. She was not a silversmith, so she designed the jewelry and had it executed by a number of different silversmiths in Taxco. In the mid-1960s she moved to southern California where she concentrated on her painting and design projects. This is a very rare and early design from the Popowski taller in Taxco. I've only seen one other example of this design EVER in my 45+ year career! It measures 6" long by 1-1/8" wide, and weighs 29.7 grams total. Marked as shown, "Popowski Sterling". An early 1950s Chato design that has had endless permutations by Los Castillo over the years - basically a concave setting at top centering a large stone with a wide band bracelet below - the concave setting has taken many shapes, and centered many different cuts and types of stones, and the band has tapered or not, and been constructed of various metals, but basically the same design nonetheless - this is one of the earliest examples, created in ‘Metales Castillo’ (sterling, copper, and brass) and centering a large vividly colored almost ‘painterly’ azurmalachite cabochon - no doubt a one of a kind and possibly the prototype for all the later variants by Los Castillo.

Salvador Vaca Teran (1920-1974) was first cousin to the Castillo brothers, and joined them at the start of Los Castillo in 1939 - several of his designs at Los Castillo became classics and continued to be produced after he left to open his workshop La India Bonita in Mexico City in 1952 - this is one of those designs - design number 111 - a handmade sterling silver overlay pre-Columbian revival design of two ball players - sport was an important part of pre-Columbian Mesoamerican societies throughout ancient Mexico, and the Castillo brothers and their cousin Salvador Terán were greatly influenced by the many examples of pre-Columbian art and architecture still being discovered in Mexico in those days - measures 1-7/8" diameter, and weighs 24 grams total - marked at back as shown in the second photo - the brooch is composed of two layers of sterling silver, the upper layer is cut-thru, and the bottom layer is oxidized black to make the cut-thru design contrast strongly with the polished silver surfaces surrounding it.
The marks on Salvador Terán design brooch from Los Castillo circa 1950s - design number 111, "Made in Mexico", "Los Castillo Taxco" in a circle around the Eagle 15 mark, and "925" for sterling silver.

A super rare vintage 1940s handmade 980 silver Flower Blossom design brooch by Chato Castillo from very early in his career in Taxco. Entirely handmade hammered from behind, the high grade nearly pure 980 silver has been shaped using the repoussage technique to form the dimensional flower design, then hand etched at front with applied silver balls applied to the flower center. Last, the silver was given a patina (black) in the deepest recesses for contrast with the gleaming white silver! A very rare design that I haven't seen before or since, and according to the classic, "Mexican Jewelry" (1963) by Mary Davis and Greta Pack, "...In the few jewelry pieces that he makes...his pieces are all one of a kind..." (p.195). Measures 3" wide by 2.5" tall at front, and weighs 32.2 grams or over an ounce of nearly pure silver. Marked at back as shown, "Chato Castillo Taxco" with no metal fineness mark, but this is one of his earliest, and he always used 980 silver in the very early days after leaving the Spratling workshop. Tested and guaranteed to be as described. Excellent vintage condition.

This is the earlier version of the design in iron or steel that has been given a blue patination then silver wire is inlaid to form the design of a starry night, and a single moonstone representing the full moon reflecting on the waters below. These blued steel pieces are extremely rare, and this brooch design is the only one of this version that I've seen in my 45+ years in the field. This one is about 1.5" diameter, and it's marked "Chato Castillo" and design number "101".
This is a later version, probably the early 1950s, and the blued steel is set in a sterling silver frame. Otherwise, almost the same design, with a single moonstone representing the full moon reflecting on the waters below. The design is silver wire inlaid into a blued steel base. Marked at back "Los Castillo Taxco Hecho en Mexico" and design number '101'. Measures about 1.5" diameter and 17 grams total. The only one of this version of the design that I have seen ever! A very large vintage 1950s original oil on canvas pre-Hispanic Figures painting by Annette Nancarrow from during her many years spent in Mexico. She was a close friend of Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo among many other Mexican artists and writers, and collaborated with Rivera on a number of his murals over the years, and I believe that his huge collection of pre-Hispanic figures (which later became the basis for the collection of the Anahuacalli Museum in Mexico City) was the inspiration for this artwork. One of the figures (at center left, shown in side profile) even looks like Diego Rivera - see my last photo which is of Diego Rivera in front of a pre-Hispanic temple taken near the end of his life! The second to last photo is of Diego Rivera with part of his collection of pre Columbian objects, and the small crouching figure in front of him holding a pole-like weapon is also the front and center figure in this painting by Nancarrow! This painting would have been completed either just before or just after his death, and I believe that it is an homage to her great friend, his obsession with pre-Hispanic artifacts, and their friendship of so many years! A wonderful and quite vividly painted artwork, and with deep personal meaning for the artist. And, in addition, one of the largest and best paintings by Nancarrow that I have seen in person or published! This painting is in the original painted wood frame probably made by the artist herself, and still bears a partial gallery tag at back from when it was first shown at the Galleria de Arte Mendelsohn in Mexico City. The artwork measures 32.5" by 40.5" at the outside of the thin wood frame which adds about 1/2" all around, and measures 1-1/2" deep. It is signed at front as shown, "Annette Nancarrow Mexico". Excellent vintage condition.
Nancarrow (1907-1991) was born in NYC on Oct. 13, 1907. She was an Art major at Hunter College and later received her Masters in Fine Arts from Columbia University. She was awarded a scholarship to the National Academy of Design. (See my second to last photograph of the artist as a young woman in NYC.) She married young to an attorney and had a daughter named Cherry. While in New York she became friendly with the "Big Three" Mexican painters: Diego Rivera, who was working at Rockefeller Center, Jose Clemente Orozco who was exhibiting at the Delphic Studios and David Alfaro Siqueiros who was lecturing on the use of industrial paints for wall murals. They encouraged her to visit Mexico, which she did after her exhibition at the Modern Age Gallery. She then moved there permanently a year later. As a painter there she continued her art studies at the Academia de San Carlos and befriended all the important artists of the dav. She became Orozco's assistant in one of his fresco ceiling murals, "The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse" in the Templo de Jesus, the oldest Catholic Chapel on the continent. He then painted her portrait. (See my last photo of the artist in front of of her portrait by Orozco.) Jesus Guerrero Galvan, Federico Cantu and Pedro Friedeberg also painted portraits of her. Diego Rivera painted a portrait of her second husband, Louis Stephens, with whom she had two boys, Charles and Luis. Frida Kahlo dedicated a lithograph to her with the words: "Anita - Life has brought us together and I love you. Frida." Annette had her first one woman show at the prominent Galeria de Arte Mexicano directed by Inez Amor. Orozco wrote the introduction to her invitation for this show. In a competition entitled "A Wall to Paint On," she won second prize for a mural, "Boy's Dream to Become a Bull Fighter."
An original oil on canvas by Annette Nancarrow - a posthumous tribute to her old friend, Diego Rivera, and his passion for pre-Columbian artifacts!

Designed by Stella Popowski for Los Castillo in Taxco. This box has a sterling silver lid frame with metales casados (sterling and brass) that also includes black onyx and turquoise inlay in an abstract geometric design. The design reminds me of shapes viewed through a fun house mirror, everything seems a little off kilter! Measures a bit over 4” long by about 3” wide by just under 2” tall. The sterling lid fits loosely over the handmade Mexican redwood box base. These boxes by Popowski are really little artworks to place on a table or shelf, although they can be used for practical purposes too. Popowski was a Jewish emigré from Poland just before the Second World War whose family moved to Cuba first, then a few years later to Mexico. Popowski designed for Antonio Pineda and Los Castillo before opening her own workshop in the late 1950s in Taxco. She left Mexico in the early to mid 1960s for Southern California where she lived in the LA area before ending up in the suburbs of San Diego. She created unique artworks using a variety of techniques including oils and watercolors, and designed decorative objects like menus and greeting cards. Her unique artworks were shown in a great many galleries and art fairs in Southern California in her final years alongside many of the perhaps better recognized artists from the area. NFS.
A Los Castillo Stella Popowski design handmade onix negro box with matching belt buckle in metales casados, onix negro and turquoise - this is the most typical color combination found in Popowski designs for Los Castillo, and since most pieces found these days are in this combination, I am guessing that it was the most popular at the time of their creation - I also have the matching cufflinks in my collection, and I’m always looking for more examples/forms for this and other Popowski designs for Los Castillo! A vivid vintage 1960s handmade copper enamel abstract Mexican modernist tray wall art by the famed artist/enamelist/jewelry designer, Miguel Pineda. This is an exceptional example of his fine early work in the modernist vein! Vibrantly colored in orange, red, dark and light brown in a bold geometric design! The largest size for this design that I've seen, and in really great shape! This artwork for sale in my store measures 10-3/4" diameter. Signed at back as shown, "Miguel Pineda Mexico". Excellent vintage condition.
Miguel Pineda Godoy was born in Mexico City in 1940 and was introduced to enameling by Maggie Howe, American born artist who opened an enamel work shop in the Mexican capital. Pineda studied with her from 1958 to 1960; afterwards he devoted himself to experimenting on his own, learning new techniques and specializing in cloisonné, champlevé, sgrafitto and painted enamel. He sold his pieces thru Los Castillo in Taxco and Mexico City, and also at Sanborns in Mexico City. From 1966 he has fully dedicated his career to enameling and later, in the 1980s, to jewelry design. Nowadays he has an extensive catalog that include jewelry, trays, vases, plates, pictures and chalices in copper, silver or 24k gold plated. His designs include a wide variety of Pre-Columbian scenes and idols based on the Mayan and Aztec codices, modern abstract art, Byzantine, orthodox and catholic images and original designs that are influenced by the different themes he works with. His jewelry in sterling silver is usually sleek and sculptural and large statement sizes as it was mostly made in the 1980s. His artwork has been exhibited in Spain, the United States and Mexico and he is a permanent exhibitor in Mexico City's Bazar del Sabado since 1972, which is an exhibition center founded in 1960 by Ignacio Romero who designed the space and called a group of excellent artists to exhibit their work there. A special committee evaluates an artist's work before accepting him as a permanent member of this renowned center. Pineda has been appointed by the Catholic Church to do several religious enameled pieces, among the most important are the panels decorating the 36 doors of the famous Shrine of the Virgin of Guadalupe in Mexico City. The panels (15" x 32") are made up of sections of champlevé enamel on copper. It took him three years to plan, design and carry out this work. He also made the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe placed in the chapel of San Lorenzo in the Vatican.
