A super rare and quite large pair of vintage 1950s handmade sterling silver and enamel abstract modernist cufflinks by John Szymak of Dallas Texas. I've only seen a handful of cufflinks by Szymak over the years and this is the only example of this one of a kind pair that I've come across in my 45+ year career! A large and striking design that is truly wearable art for the cuff! Here's a short blurb about John Szymak taken from Marbeth Schon's " The Wearable Art Movement Part II" article on the Modern Silver magazine website... --------------- John Szymak attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Massachusetts, and the School for American Craftsmen in Rochester, New York. He maintained a workshop in Dallas, Texas. He worked in gold, silver, and pewter, with or without gems or enamels. ---------------- In addition, his work appeared in the seminal exhibition, "Designer - Craftsmen USA 1960", and was pictured in the Craft Horizons issue (July/August 1960) that covered the exhibition. His work is quite rare overall, especially his mid century modernist pieces, and his cufflinks are harder to find than hen's teeth! Each cufflnk measures 1-3/8" long by 1/2" wide, and the pair weigh 14.5 grams total. Marked at backs "Szymak" also "Sterling" on swivelbacks. Excellent vintage condition.

An eye-catching pair of vintage 1950s handmade sterling silver abstract modernist cufflinks by American metalsmith Paul Miller of NYC. Paul Miller worked with sterling silver and natural stones like black spinel, carnelian, agate, moonstone, malachite, etc. His designs are most often abstract, entirely handmade, and likely one of a kind! Each cufflinks is a square shape with rounded corners with applied sterling wire in an abstract organic biomorphic design, and with one applied half-sphere in one corner. The cufflinks measure 7/8" by 7/8" at fronts and the pair weigh 15.8 grams total for the pair. One cufflinks is unmarked, the other is marked "Paul Miller Sterling". Unfortunately, little is known of the life or career of Paul Miller, but his designs speak for themselves! These likely one of a kind wearable art cufflinks are obviously the work of a gifted designer and talented metalsmith! Excellent vintage condition.

For sale here is a RARE pair of vintage 1950s handmade sterling silver and wood modernist cufflinks by Ed Wiener NYC, and purchased from him by world-famous photographer Arnold Crane in the 1950s and in his personal collection until just recently purchased from the estate. An iconic mid century modernist design in sterling silver and wood by one of the greats of the period! Ed Wiener was a native New Yorker born in 1918, and began his career in artist circles in the 1940s in Greenwich Village in New York City where he had a studio. His work is decidedly modernist and less surrealist than some of his contemporaries. His clients included the sculptor Louise Nevelson, and the dancer Martha Graham. He worked in silver for the most part, often combining it with wood and semiprecious gemstones like cultured pearls, amethyst and other varieties of quartz. In the early 1960s he branched out into using gold and more valuable gemstones in his jewelry, but the earlier silver designs will always be my favorites! He passed away in 1991 at the age of 73. The cufflinks measure 3/4" wide by 3/8" tall at fronts, and the pair weigh 10.7 grams total. They are marked at back "Ed Wiener Sterling" though the mark is partially obscured by the swivelbacks, but the mark is still readable. Excellent vintage condition
These cufflinks were originally owned by Arnold Crane (1932-2014), an American collector and photographer of global renown, and are from his estate. From the 1950’s through the 1990’s, Crane enjoyed unparalleled access to such giants as Man Ray, Walker Evans, Ansel Adams and Edward Steichen and many others. His photography collection was the largest in the world at that time and became the lynchpin acquisition of a special wing of the Getty Museum in Los Angeles. His collections of African, Oceanic and Native American art are well-known. He was an early collector of Mexican silver from Taxco, and his collection included works by Spratling, Los Castillo, Hector Aguilar, Salvador Teran, and Sigi, among others. He also collected the works of a few of the American modernists including of course this pair by early American studio artist Ed Wiener. His own photographic artwork is found in the permanent collections of the Met, MOMA and the Art Institute of Chicago. See also my photograph of Crane taken in the latter part of his life. These cufflinks were originally purchased by Crane directly from Ed Wiener in New York City in the 1950s where he lived and worked at that time, and were in his collection until his death in 2014, and I just recently acquired them from his estate.
A great pair of sterling and wood modernist cufflinks made by Ed Wiener of NYC, and from the estate of acclaimed photographer and collector Arnold Crane.

a RUGGED pair of vintage 1960s signed DC one of a kind handmade sterling silver brutalist modernist dimensional design cufflinks. Such a unique and intriguing vintage brutalist modernist design! Each is unique as you can see in my photos, and no doubt a one of a kind pair by a talented mid-century artist! Measure 7/8" by 3/4" at fronts, and the pair weigh a hefty 23.3 grams total. Marked at back of one cufflinks as shown, "DC" and dated "'69" for 1969. Also marked on the swivelbacks, "Sterling". I purchased these cufflinks at an estate sale in Wisconsin, and I am guessing that the artist was from nearby Chicago but I haven't been able to find out anything about the maker. an INTRICATE pair of vintage 1960s 70s handmade 800 silver geometric modernist design cufflinks from Orno of Warsaw, Poland, and with an original Orno paper label with information about the pair in Polish. Orno (meaning "I adorn" in Latin) was an artist cooperative in Warsaw composed of many artists and craftspeople. The jewelry was primarily made in silver and the items were produced in small series, never exceeding 100 of any item made by the cooperative. This pair of dimensional geometric design cufflinks were most likely made in the 1960s to 1970s, but there are no date letters on Orno jewelry, so hard to say exactly. The cufflinks measure 7/8" by a hair over 1/2" at fronts by just over 1/8" thick, and the pair weigh 10.6 grams total. Marked "Orno" on both cufflinks as shown, also the Polish silver hallmark for Warsaw and 800 silver used after 1963. As noted above, this pair come with an original Orno paper label with information about this pair of cufflinks written in Polish including the designer/maker name which I am unable to read. Excellent vintage condition
