This first-century BCE Greek buckle shows a griffin, first worked in repoussé and then engraved, with a slot and knob to fasten the belt.
It was worn by someone living or visiting an ancient Greek colony called Pontic Olbia, which was founded in the 7th century BCE on the banks of the Bug River estuary in present-day
Ukraine.
In ancient Greece, a griffin was a mythical creature with the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle, symbolizing strength, majesty, and guardianship. They were depicted as fierce protectors of treasure, particularly gold, and were said to be in constant conflict with the Arimaspians, a one-eyed race who sought to steal the treasure. Griffins were also associated with the gods, with some myths claiming they pulled the chariot of Apollo or acted as the "Hounds of Zeus".

A super rare vintage 1940s handmade 980 silver Flower Blossom design brooch by Chato Castillo from very early in his career in Taxco. Entirely handmade hammered from behind, the high grade nearly pure 980 silver has been shaped using the repoussage technique to form the dimensional flower design, then hand etched at front with applied silver balls applied to the flower center. Last, the silver was given a patina (black) in the deepest recesses for contrast with the gleaming white silver! A very rare design that I haven't seen before or since, and according to the classic, "Mexican Jewelry" (1963) by Mary Davis and Greta Pack, "...In the few jewelry pieces that he makes...his pieces are all one of a kind..." (p.195). Measures 3" wide by 2.5" tall at front, and weighs 32.2 grams or over an ounce of nearly pure silver. Marked at back as shown, "Chato Castillo Taxco" with no metal fineness mark, but this is one of his earliest, and he always used 980 silver in the very early days after leaving the Spratling workshop. Tested and guaranteed to be as described. Excellent vintage condition.
