An abstract vintage 1960s handmade copper enamel modernist platter/artwork by enamelist/metalsmith Jules Perrier of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Perrier started making jewelry and enamel art in the mid 1950s, and his enamel artwork in particular are very distinctive and striking visually! An incredible abstract modernist design in such vivid colors and amazingly it is in near flawless condition especially given its age! The darker colored abstract design is raised slightly above the vivid orange background which adds texture to this outstanding design! Measures 9" diameter by about 1-1/8" high at the rim. Marked at back as shown, "Jules Perrier Quebec". As noted above this artwork is in excellent vintage condition.

A vivid vintage 1960s 70s handmade copper enamel abstract modernist artwork by Pierrette Leclair of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Small, but mighty design in bold colors that catch the eye, and the irregular shape adds to the charm in my opinion! The enamel is thick in some areas similar to impasto painting! Pierrette Leclair was born in Montreal and studied classical music in her youth, but gave it up when she discovered artistic enameling in 1953. Self-taught, she later added some courses with specific artists to increase her skills in enameling. She participated in many exhibitions, and won many prizes over the course of her long career. Her work has been gifted to many world leaders and celebrities by the city of Montreal, and the province of Quebec as well including the Queen Mother of the UK, and the wife of Charles de Gaulle, and the first three astronauts to land on the moon! This is an exceptional example of her artistic work, and in such great shape! Measures just under 5-7/8" by 5-5/8" by just under 1" high at rim. Signed at back as shown, "Pierrette Leclair fait main Que.". Excellent vintage condition.

An expressive vintage 1960s 70s SIGNED handmade hammered copper enamel Ethnic Tribal design artwork tray. Entirely handmade hand fabricated repoussage (hammered from behind), then given profuse incised markings at front and genuine vitreous enamel! A three-lobed small tray with intricate decoration and colorful enameling, the design looks like tribal art to me but I can't say for sure where or when from exactly! Measures 8-3/8" across by 6.25" by about 1" high at highest points on the rim. Signed at front with artist initials, "SH". No other markings, and I'm guessing that it originally had some kind of sticker to identify the maker or origin. Could have one of those sticker hangers added at back if you'd like to hang it on the wall. I'm listing another similar artwork from the same estate today as well. Excellent vintage condition.

A stylized vintage 1960s 70s SIGNED handmade hammered copper enamel Ethnic Tribal design artwork. Entirely handmade hand fabricated repoussage (hammered from behind), then given profuse incised markings at front and enameled in bright colors! The figure looks like it has some ethnic tribal ceremonial or ritualistic meaning, and I'm not sure of the exact significance of it but it's striking and beautifully hand crafted! Very brightly colored genuine vitreous enamel throughout! Measures 7" by 7" square by about 1/4" high at rim. Signed at front with artist initials, "SS". No other markings, and I'm guessing that it originally had some kind of sticker to identify the maker or origin. I'm listing another similar artwork from the same estate today as well. A rare one of a kind vintage 1970s handmade copper enamel modernist Angel design artwork by California artist/enamelist Betty Seaver of San Diego. A wonderful unique signed artwork by this rarely seen artist/enamelist! Enameled in multiple bright and cheery colors on a cut-out plaque that is attached to a rectangular wood backing. The design is of an angel or winged goddess holding a star sign in one hand, and with another star sign off to the left. Very brightly colored and immaculately crafted by this master of the art! Here's a short biography of the artist that I compiled from online sources:

Betty Seaver (1919-2002) was born and raised in San Diego. She got her degree in art from San Diego State, and afterwards taught art in the public school system for several years. In the 1970s, she took up enameling. She was a member of the Allied Craftsmen, and the Enamel Guild, and sometimes volunteered at the Spanish Village Art Center in Balboa Park. She sold her artworks mainly in local galleries, and her enamel art pieces are in several important private and public collections.

The outer edges of the wood backing measures 11" by 6" by about 3/4" at thickest points. Signed at back as shown in my photos, "Enamel on copper Betty Seaver San Diego, California". A rare no doubt one of a kind artwork by a hard to find California enamel artist! Excellent vintage condition.

A rare vintage 1960s handmade copper enamel in wood modernist Cat design box by California artist/enamelist Kay Whitcomb of San Diego. Entirely handmade one of a kind piece of vintage modernist enamel art by one of the preeminent mid century American enamelists! Here is a short biography of the artist from the Enamel Arts Foundation website:

A major figure in American enameling, Kay Whitcomb was born in 1921 in Arlington, Massachusetts, to a long line of New England metalsmiths. Her work explored diverse subjects, and she incorporated words, phrases, and proverbs into it. She became versed in numerous techniques and started exploring unconventional methods of fusing glass to metal. By the late 1960s she was experimenting enameling on steel at factories in Germany and Belgium. Among her many large-scale works produced at Crahait Emailleries in Gosselies, Belgium, was a pair of eighty-four-by-thirty-two-inch doors, which were shown at California Design 11 at the Pasadena Art Museum in 1971. Her desire to share her knowledge led her to teach enameling at the La Jolla Art Museum and the San Diego Museum of Art shortly after her move to the region. She juried and curated numerous exhibitions and went to great efforts to keep enameling on public display. Besides exhibiting in Europe, she led the effort to have several American enamelists included in the prestigious International Biennial of Enamel Art in Limoges.

Measures 10" long by 6.5" wide by 2.5" high at rim. Marked at front in lower right corner, "Kay Whitcomb '61", also has hand etched signature and date on back into the wood as shown. No doubt a one of a kind piece of enamel art, though I have seen a very similar design in a wall-hanging version in the collection of the Enamel Arts Foundation. There is some wear and discoloration to the wood sections of the box, and the white plexiglass liner inside as shown. Excellent vintage condition.

A superb vintage 1940s 50s handmade copper enamel in wood modernist Jester Harlequin design box by California artist/enamelist couple Ellamarie and Jackson Woolley of San Diego. From their earliest work, this box is unique and numbered, you’ll never see another of this design! Super mcm design by perhaps the greatest husband/wife American enameling duo of the mid 20th century! Here is a short biography of the Woolleys from the Enamel Arts Foundation website:

The San Diego-based artists Ellamarie and Jackson Woolley were introduced to enameling in 1947 through a demonstration given by ceramist Richard Petterson at Scripps College in Claremont, California. After serving in the army during World War II, Jackson moved with his wife Ellamarie, whom he had married in 1940, to Claremont to pursue studies in art at the Claremont Graduate School.
The Woolleys’ earliest enamels, made between 1947 and 1953, were for the most part functional, intended for use or display in homes and offices. Among their favorite forms were plates, ashtrays, and boxes. While occasionally each artist worked separately, most of this early work was produced through a close collaborative partnership between husband and wife. Over time, each artist adopted an increasingly inventive approach to form and structure.
Active during a period of dynamic growth and development in the enamels field, Ellamarie and Jackson Woolley significantly advanced enameling through their individual work as well as the work they produced in partnership with one another.
Their work was prominently featured in the exhibition "San Diego’s Craft Revolution: From Post-War Modern to California Design" held at the Mingei Museum in San Diego in 2011-2012. The book for the exhibition is an invaluable resource.

This one of a kind box measures 5-7/8" by 4-5/8" by 1-7/8" tall. Marked inside on reverse side of enamel plaque as shown in photos, also marked with unique design number 4052. Excellent vintage condition.

a SUPERB one of a kind vintage 1970s handmade copper enamel abstract modernist design pendant still on the original 25" leather cord by important artist/enamelist Kay Whitcomb (1921-2015) of San Diego, California. Whitcomb is one of the most important enamelists of the 20th century, and this pendant is an extraordinary example of her very rare enameled jewelry pieces! Here's a biography (that I have shortened somewhat) of the artist given on the Enamel Arts Foundation website:

She began her art studies at Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) in 1939. She completed her course work at RISD in 1942. She moved, in 1954, to San Diego with her two children. Her work explored diverse subjects, and she started incorporating words, phrases, and proverbs into it. Her work was shown at California Design 11 at the Pasadena Art Museum in 1971. She juried and curated numerous exhibitions and went to great efforts to keep enameling on public display. Besides exhibiting in Europe, she led the effort to have several American enamelists included in the prestigious International Biennial of Enamel Art in Limoges.

This pendant is from the estate of the highly regarded Southern California studio ceramist, Wayne Chapman, and had belonged to his wife, Barbara, a textile and jewelry artist, who had traded a piece of her jewelry to Whitcomb in exchange for this pendant around 1970-71. It is not signed, but the provenance is unquestionable. It measures just over 3" tall by just over 2.25" widest point. Still hangs on the original 25" wearable leather cord that slips over the head. Can be easily replaced with a longer cord if needed, or hung on a chain or even a neck ring for different looks! Such a unique and extraordinary work by this very important enamelist and with such important provenance! A collector's dream!! Excellent vintage condition.

An exquisite vintage 1960s 70s handmade bronze and enamel on wood icon of Saint Benedict of Nursia. Entirely handmade cast bronze figure with beautifully enameled body and halo, and which has been laid down on a hand carved curving piece of wood that has a wrought bronze hanging bar at top for hanging on a wall, although it can also be stood up on a table or a shelf for display. A lovely vintage icon that will grace your home! Here's a short history of Saint Benedict that I compiled from online sources:

St. Benedict (born c. 480 CE, Nursia [Italy]—died c. 547, Monte Cassino; feast day July 11, formerly March 21) was the founder of the Benedictine monastery at Monte Cassino and father of Western monasticism; the Rule that he established became the norm for monastic living throughout Europe. In 1964, in view of the work of monks following the Benedictine Rule in the evangelization and civilization of so many European countries in the Middle Ages, Pope Paul VI proclaimed him the patron saint of all Europe.
St. Benedict is the patron saint of Europe, students, and Benedictine monasticism. He established the greatest and most famous of all monasteries at Monte Cassino, which became the home of the Benedictine Order. This icon portrays the founder of the Benedictine order dressed as an abbot, holding a scroll symbolizing his famous Rule for Monks. The words portrayed are, "Listen carefully, my son, to the master's instructions, and attend to them with the ear of your heart."

The wood backing measures just under 9" tall by 6.5" wide by about almost 2" deep at center. The enameled bronze figure at center measures almost 6" tall by 2-3/8" wide by about 1" deepest point. Weighs about 1.6 pounds prior to packing. Unmarked. I am guessing that this icon is the product of one of the American monasteries that produced modernist style religious art in the second half of the 20th century. Very finely done, and very well preserved! Excellent vintage condition.

A superb and no doubt one of a kind vintage 1960s 70s handmade copper enamel modernist Bird Dove design artwork from the David Andersen workshop in Oslo, Norway. Such a unique enamel creation with criss-crossing nearly invisible lines that appear and disappear depending on the angle of the light, or as shown in my first photo under strong lighting these lines all appear at once giving an really incredible look to the artwork! Also, the artist chose to depict the bird in such a vivid phantasmagorical psychedelic style that also has ties with Op art and even surrealism! One of the larger examples that I have run across as well! Measures 10.5" diameter by 1" high at rim, and weighs 2.5 pounds prior to packing. Marked at back as shown, "David Andersen Norway" and also has a designer mark that I haven't been able to identify yet, and that looks like "Ley". The enamel is in flawless pristine condition with no chips, cracks, crazing, loss of enamel, or damage of any kind!

A one of a kind vintage 1950s handmade copper enamel modernist Winged Creature brooch by Hank & Diny Frugte of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Entirely handmade hand wrought copper enamel wearable art brooch! With one end up, the design is a stylized butterfly, but the other end up it looks more like some fantastical creature. Can be worn either way. Entirely handmade hand-cut from thick copper sheet, then hammered from the back, and incised in sections at front, and then a gorgeous transparent orange enamel is fired overtop. The transparent enamel makes it possible to see all the hand work done to the metal prior to the enameling. At very top is a black enamel outline of the fantastical winged creature/butterfly. At back the brooch is counter enameled in a speckled dark blue enamel. Hank Frugte (d. 1990) and his wife Diny (1929-2024) were originally from the Netherlands, but emigrated to Canada just after WWII and settled in Edmonton, Alberta. They were already trained enamelists and artists who brought their talents and experience with them to Edmonton, and created amazing artworks throughout their careers! They also shared their knowledge and experience with other artists by teaching workshops and other educational endeavors in both Canada and the US. The brooch measures 2-3/8" tall by 2-1/8" widest point. Marked at back of the brooch as shown, "Hank / Diny Frugte Edmonton". Excellent vintage condition.

A hypnotic vintage 1960s 70s handmade copper enamel modernist Pinwheel Op Art design raised footed bowl artwork by enamelist/artist Lise Deschatelets (b. 1948-) of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The design reminds me of those spinning optical wheels that were used to hypnotize people in old silent movies from the 1920s! The design was no doubt influenced by the Op Art movement including artists like Victor Vasarely and Bridget Riley, but also a common design found on whirligigs and other wind-operated toys and wind chimes. Lise Deschatelets is an enamelist, a painter, and a sculptor from Montreal who stopped creating enamel artworks after just a few years to concentrate on her painting and sculpture. Consequently, her enamel artworks are much rarer than most from the period! Measures 9-7/8" diameter by 2" high at the rim. Counter-enameled in a finely speckled blue enamel on the bottom. A single large hand carved wood 'foot' attached at the bottom as shown. Marked "Deschatelets" on the bottom in gold paint over top of the enamel. Has an attached metal hanging device at the bottom, but can be displayed on a table as well. There is one very very small fleabite along the outer rim that isn't apparent at all except when the artwork is held up to the light. Can't be seen when displayed on a shelf or in a case! Excellent vintage condition with the above caveat and as shown.

a SPECTACULAR vintage 1950s handmade copper enamel abstract modernist Galactic Cluster or Microbiology design platter/artwork by California artist/enamelist Annemarie Davidson (1920-2012) of Sierra Madre, California. Super vivid coloring and super eye-catching modernist design resembling stained glass globules on a field of black. Is it a galactic cluster? Or a slide of microscopic creatures swimming in a Petri dish? Or an amazing Pointillism stained glass creation? I can't say for sure, but it's amazing! The only example of this design that I have seen! I am guessing that this is one of her earliest works from the late 1950s because the gauge of copper used is much heavier than any I have held before, and the artist mark at back is hand drawn in the enamel not done with a stencil like you see in later pieces. (See the short biography below for other indications of the work being an earlier one.) Extraordinary size at 11" diameter makes this a real collector coup!
Measures 11" diameter by about 3/4" high at rim. Still retains original artist sticker at back, along with her signature, a conjoined AD. The front side is near flawless with just a couple very very light surface abrasions that aren't at all noticeable when displayed. Also, at back there are three indentations along the rim from being hung on the wall, and some light crazing to the enamel in a couple spots. No loss to the enamel at all. Excellent vintage condition with the above caveats but no damage or detractors whatsoever as shown

Born in Berlin in 1920, Annemarie Behrendt moved with her family to New York in 1936.
In 1957, while her husband was on sabbatical at Harvard University, Davidson studied briefly with the prominent enamelist Doris Hall at a community center in Cambridge. While Hall worked in a broad range of styles, from nonrepresentational to figurative, it was her brilliantly colored abstract work that most deeply influenced Davidson. Davidson’s earlier work, done between 1957 and 1959, reflects that influence in its sparkling color and vivid decoration.
Her work was selected for the prestigious Decorative Arts and Ceramics Exhibition at the Wichita Art Association in 1958, and it was featured in several of the pioneering California Design exhibitions at the Pasadena Art Museum in the early 1960s. In 1961 three of her works were reproduced in the catalogue for California Design 6. Throughout her long and richly productive career, Davidson has created forms intended for everyday use, which she decorates with spare abstract patterns or the free-form organic shapes that she calls “jewels.” For many of her abstract compositions, she uses a sgraffito technique, incising straight lines into the enamel, which fan out from a central focal point and present a linear counterpoint to the more fluid sculptural forms of her “jewels.” Davidson has collaborated with fellow artist Blaine Rath since 1959. Rath creates beautifully crafted boxes in a wide variety of woods, in which Davidson mounts her elegantly proportioned enamels. Her approach is in keeping with the designer-craftsman aesthetic, as she explained in an interview published in the Cross-Country Craftsman in 1962: “My philosophy of work is simple: I try to create something colorful and decorative in order to make small objects, necessary in the home, beautiful.”

A super rare early Annemarie Davidson copper enamel artwork circa 1950s - is it a galactic cluster, or a view thru a microscope, or a pointillist stained glass design?

These are not at all noticeable when worn, or really at all except with magnification. Excellent vintage condition.

A delightful vintage 1980s handmade copper enamel figurative Two Geese amongst the Marshes design artwork by Quebec, Canada, artist/enamelist Bernard Sequin Poirier. A brightly colored and cheery scene of two geese in what looks like a marsh probably looking for their next meal amongst the flowers and bull rushes by probably one of the most important late 20th century enamel artists from Canada! Counter-enameled in gray with diffused streaks of red on the reverse.
This fine enamel artwork measures 11-5/8" diameter by 1.25" high at rim. Marked at front as shown, "Seguin Poirier". Also has some very small artist notation at back that I cannot make out, but have pictured closely in my photos. Excellent vintage condition really nearly like new with no damage no loss to the enamel no detractors whatsoever.

A huge vintage 1950s 60s handmade copper enamel abstract modernist pendant on leather thong necklace by the artist/enamelist Margaret Johnson of Wildweed Workshop of Denver. An early and quite striking modernist design from her earliest days in Denver, Colorado, prior to her studio being located in Aspen or Phoenix. Here's a short biography of the artist:

Margaret Johnson’s workshop, known as Wildweed Workshop, is a creative sanctuary where she crafts her renowned enamel pieces. The space is designed to foster both artistic exploration and technical precision, reflecting Johnson’s dedication to her craft. The studio has been instrumental in her artistic development and serves as a venue for her to engage with the broader art community. Johnson’s approach to her work is deeply personal, and her studio is a place where she can experiment with techniques and materials, particularly her innovative use of transparent enamels. In addition to being her personal workspace, the Wildweed Workshop also functions as a hub for sharing her expertise with others. Johnson frequently hosts workshops and classes, offering insights into her techniques and encouraging other artists to explore the possibilities of enameling. The studio remains a vibrant center of creativity and learning, reflecting Johnson’s commitment to both her art and the artistic community.

A quite large piece, the pendant measures 2-7/8" tall by 2.25" wide, and hangs on the original leather thong that measures 23" wearable length and is meant to be pulled over the head, but can be untied and retied if needed. Marked at back as shown, "Wildweed Denver". There is some very slight edge wear to the enamel at the back on the edges which may be original kiln flaws, and of course isn't noticeable when worn and doesn't detract from the pendant in the least. Excellent vintage condition.

A striking vintage 1960s handmade copper enamel on wood Op Art Moiré abstract modernist design box by California artist/enamelist Annemarie Davidson of Sierra Madre, California. Super vivid coloring and super eye-catching Op Art moiré pattern inspired design! Born in Berlin in 1920, Davidson came to the US in the mid 1930s, and took up her residence in California in the mid 1940s where she spent the rest of her life creating striking and unique enamel works of art! (For a great biography of the artist take a look at "The Enamels of Annemarie Davidson" by Bernard N. Jazzar and Harold B. Nelson on the Ganoksin metal arts website.) Measures 5" by 5" at top by 2.25" high at edges. Still bears the original artist sticker at the bottom as shown in the photos. The wood section of the box was made by Blaine Rath who collaborated with Davidson often on boxes, bookends, and other projects. There is some very slight separation in one corner of the bottom wood section which is not at all noticeable when displayed but is shown in my third photo closeup of the side, and is no doubt just natural warping of the wood over time from the drying process. Excellent vintage condition with the above caveat and as shown.
