A superb and no doubt one of a kind vintage 1960s 70s handmade copper enamel modernist Bird Dove design artwork from the David Andersen workshop in Oslo, Norway. Such a unique enamel creation with criss-crossing nearly invisible lines that appear and disappear depending on the angle of the light, or as shown in my first photo under strong lighting these lines all appear at once giving an really incredible look to the artwork! Also, the artist chose to depict the bird in such a vivid phantasmagorical psychedelic style that also has ties with Op art and even surrealism! One of the larger examples that I have run across as well! Measures 10.5" diameter by 1" high at rim, and weighs 2.5 pounds prior to packing. Marked at back as shown, "David Andersen Norway" and also has a designer mark that I haven't been able to identify yet, and that looks like "Ley". The enamel is in flawless pristine condition with no chips, cracks, crazing, loss of enamel, or damage of any kind!

A striking vintage 1960s 70s handmade copper enamel abstract modernist artwork by Pierrette Leclair of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Visually arresting abstract design in contrasting colors and large irregular shapes! The enamel is quite thick in areas similar to impasto painting! Pierrette Leclair was born in Montreal and studied classical music in her youth, but gave it up when she discovered artistic enameling in 1953. Self-taught, she later added some courses with specific artists to increase her skills in enameling. She participated in many exhibitions, and won many prizes over the course of her long career. Her work has been gifted to many world leaders and celebrities by the city of Montreal, and the province of Quebec as well including the Queen Mother of the UK, and the wife of Charles de Gaulle, and the first three astronauts to land on the moon! This is an exceptional example of her artistic work, and in such great shape! Measures 7.75" in diameter by 1" high at rim. Signed at back as shown, "Pierrette Leclair fait main Que.". Also marked, "L'Accueil de Montreal" (Montreal's welcome) which I believe means that this artwork was made for sale during the Winter Olympics in Montreal in 1976 when Montreal welcomed the world! Excellent vintage condition.

A dynamic vintage 1960s 70s handmade copper enamel abstracted modernist platter artwork by Anita Trottier of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. One of the most stunning enamel artworks that I have seen in quite a while, and in such great shape! Trottier seems to draw from indigenous Cree artworks as well as abstract modernist artworks to create a unique design idiom in her enamel art! Anita Trottier was a self-taught artisan from Quebec who worked from the 1960s to the 90s, and her pieces are all one of a kind unique masterworks in the enameling art! She also made jewelry, though I have seen very few examples. Measures 9.75" diameter by 1.25" high at rim. Signed at back as shown, "A. Trottier Mtl. Que." In excellent vintage condition.

A one of a kind vintage 1960s handmade copper enamel abstract modernist artwork by Israeli artist/enamelist Agi Vardi of Giv'at Haim, Israel. An outstanding original artwork by a prominent Israeli mid century artist/enamelist! Vardi is both a painter and a teacher who works in enamel, batik, and collage. He was born in Hungary, and studied at the Beaux Arts in Paris, before moving to Israel where he became a member of the Giv'at Haim artist colony. This artwork is copper enamel at center with underlaying bands of copper all above a dark brown velvet over board background, and is still in its original period wood frame. Measures 13" by 13" by 1" tall at outer edges. Marked at front as shown, also written information at back as shown. The cardboard backing is loose in one corner at back where the tape has lifted slightly but this is of course not at all noticeable when the artwork is hung, and is easily remedied if you wish with a bit of tape or glue. Excellent vintage condition.

A superb vintage 1950s 60s one of a kind handmade copper enamel and wood Mexican modernist abstract design box by American expatriate, enamelist, and educator Maggie Howe. According to an article by Carol Miller Zapata published in Craft Horizons in 1965, Howe was “an ex-cellist who came to Mexico to study law and became the cosmopolitan capital’s most dynamic and vivid color linguist.” Zapata observed that Howe’s favorite subjects were flowers, crickets, and insects, which she frequently depicted on platters, ashtrays, and enameled teak candlesticks. She displayed and sold her work at an exhibition center in Mexico City called Bazar del Sabado, which she helped organize in 1961. In addition, she exhibited at La Sirena Gallery in San Antonio, Texas. She was also an educator, and Miguel Pineda was perhaps her most famous student. This no doubt one of a kind box measures 11.75" long by 3-3/8" wide by 2" tall. It is compartmented inside, and her enameled signature plaque is in one of those compartments inside as shown. It is marked, "Maggie Howe Mexico". This is the only enameled box by Howe that I have seen in my entire career, and I doubt that she made many of them! Super rare form, one of a kind example, and in such great shape! A collector's dream! In excellent vintage condition.

a WHIMSICAL and fun vintage 1960s 70s handmade copper enamel modernist Fish design pendant. A fun and charming entirely handmade piece of vintage modern art to wear! The pendant measures 2.25" long by 1.25" wide and is shown on a copper neckring (not included), and could also be worn on a chain or black cord, or even worn as a pin with a safety pin through the bale at top of the pendant. (For a fan of fishing, and since the bail is at the mouth of the fish, this could also be attached to a fishing hook then to a cord or chain for a unique and no doubt much-remarked look!) Unmarked, and no doubt sold at a gallery or art fair with artist paperwork that has been lost over the years. This is a handmade piece of artisan jewelry that has natural variations due to the handcrafting process that produce a rough and irregular finish. This is original, not damage, and it is part of the charm of owning a handmade one of a kind piece. Excellent vintage condition

A huge and quite rare vintage 1950s handmade copper enamel modernist pendant on cord necklace by San Diego artist/craftsman Barney Reid (1913-1992). A very large quite rare and outstanding example of the modernist enamel art created by this important California artist from the mid 20th century! Truly wearable art and a one of a kind! A founding member of San Diego’s Allied Craftsmen, Reid was a talented artisan and prolific in many media including metal, clay, wood, and marble, as well as oil painting and furniture design. It is his work in enamel and jewelry, however, for which he is best known. A selection was featured in several shows in the 1950s and 60s at New York City’s Museum of Contemporary Crafts, including Enamels in 1959. Reid's work was prominently displayed in the exhibition "San Diego Craft Revolution" at the Mingei Museum in San Diego in 2012. One of Reid's larger works, a multipanel enamel mobile, sold at Christie's in 2016 for over $32K before auction fees and taxes! This pendant measures 3" in diameter, and hangs on the original 20" cord that can be retied at different lengths as desired, or even replaced for larger sizes. Marked at back as shown in the photos. Excellent vintage condition.
A skilled graphic designer, Reid worked as the art director at the Naval Electronics Lab, Point Loma, San Diego from 1951 to 1969. During this time he was commissioned by the Lab to create two murals for their cafeteria. He also created a mural for the Port of San Diego. In the 1950s and 1960s, Reid’s enamels were featured in several prominent exhibitions throughout the country including the prestigious annual Decorative Arts and Ceramics Exhibition at the Wichita Art Association in 1952, 1953 and 1954; Enamel: An Historic Survey to the Present Day, organized by the Cooper Union Museum for the Arts of Decoration in 1954; the seminal Enamels at New York’s Museum of Contemporary Crafts in 1959; and the Scripps Annual in Claremont, California in 1964. One of Reid’s most inventive works – an abstraction in which small enamel panels were mounted on a horizontal wood panel in a lively, interlocking composition – was featured in a 1957 article in Craft Horizons – the forerunner to American Craft – in an article titled Plaque Bouillabaisse." Reid's work was also prominently featured in the groundbreaking exhibition, "San Diego's Craft Revolution —From Post-War Modern to California Design" at the Mingei International Museum in San Diego from 2011-2012. This painting is on artist board that has been laid down on a wood backing just slightly larger than the painting as shown, and has a small hanging loop at back top. Measures 16.75" tall by 5" wide. Not signed, and was from the artists personal collection and no doubt displayed during the holiday season by the artist and his family. As noted above, the certificate from the estate which is signed by the artist's daughter, Julia Reid Miller, will accompany this artwork to its new home. Excellent vintage condition.
