A vivid vintage 1960s 70s handmade copper enamel abstract modernist artwork by Pierrette Leclair of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Small, but mighty design in bold colors that catch the eye, and the irregular shape adds to the charm in my opinion! The enamel is thick in some areas similar to impasto painting! Pierrette Leclair was born in Montreal and studied classical music in her youth, but gave it up when she discovered artistic enameling in 1953. Self-taught, she later added some courses with specific artists to increase her skills in enameling. She participated in many exhibitions, and won many prizes over the course of her long career. Her work has been gifted to many world leaders and celebrities by the city of Montreal, and the province of Quebec as well including the Queen Mother of the UK, and the wife of Charles de Gaulle, and the first three astronauts to land on the moon! This is an exceptional example of her artistic work, and in such great shape! Measures just under 5-7/8" by 5-5/8" by just under 1" high at rim. Signed at back as shown, "Pierrette Leclair fait main Que.". Excellent vintage condition.

A rare one of a kind vintage 1970s handmade copper enamel modernist Angel design artwork by California artist/enamelist Betty Seaver of San Diego. A wonderful unique signed artwork by this rarely seen artist/enamelist! Enameled in multiple bright and cheery colors on a cut-out plaque that is attached to a rectangular wood backing. The design is of an angel or winged goddess holding a star sign in one hand, and with another star sign off to the left. Very brightly colored and immaculately crafted by this master of the art! Here's a short biography of the artist that I compiled from online sources:

Betty Seaver (1919-2002) was born and raised in San Diego. She got her degree in art from San Diego State, and afterwards taught art in the public school system for several years. In the 1970s, she took up enameling. She was a member of the Allied Craftsmen, and the Enamel Guild, and sometimes volunteered at the Spanish Village Art Center in Balboa Park. She sold her artworks mainly in local galleries, and her enamel art pieces are in several important private and public collections.

The outer edges of the wood backing measures 11" by 6" by about 3/4" at thickest points. Signed at back as shown in my photos, "Enamel on copper Betty Seaver San Diego, California". A rare no doubt one of a kind artwork by a hard to find California enamel artist! Excellent vintage condition.

A superb vintage 1940s 50s handmade copper enamel in wood modernist Jester Harlequin design box by California artist/enamelist couple Ellamarie and Jackson Woolley of San Diego. From their earliest work, this box is unique and numbered, you’ll never see another of this design! Super mcm design by perhaps the greatest husband/wife American enameling duo of the mid 20th century! Here is a short biography of the Woolleys from the Enamel Arts Foundation website:

The San Diego-based artists Ellamarie and Jackson Woolley were introduced to enameling in 1947 through a demonstration given by ceramist Richard Petterson at Scripps College in Claremont, California. After serving in the army during World War II, Jackson moved with his wife Ellamarie, whom he had married in 1940, to Claremont to pursue studies in art at the Claremont Graduate School.
The Woolleys’ earliest enamels, made between 1947 and 1953, were for the most part functional, intended for use or display in homes and offices. Among their favorite forms were plates, ashtrays, and boxes. While occasionally each artist worked separately, most of this early work was produced through a close collaborative partnership between husband and wife. Over time, each artist adopted an increasingly inventive approach to form and structure.
Active during a period of dynamic growth and development in the enamels field, Ellamarie and Jackson Woolley significantly advanced enameling through their individual work as well as the work they produced in partnership with one another.
Their work was prominently featured in the exhibition "San Diego’s Craft Revolution: From Post-War Modern to California Design" held at the Mingei Museum in San Diego in 2011-2012. The book for the exhibition is an invaluable resource.

This one of a kind box measures 5-7/8" by 4-5/8" by 1-7/8" tall. Marked inside on reverse side of enamel plaque as shown in photos, also marked with unique design number 4052. Excellent vintage condition.

A gigantic one of a kind vintage 1980s handmade copper enamel modernist Birds Doves artwork by the artistic duo Micheline de Passillé and Yves Sylvestre of Quebec Canada. This is the second very large enamel artwork that I've had by the Canadian duo, and both were dated 1980 and with a bird theme. I am guessing that they were made for a particular show or exhibition that year, and no doubt are unique artworks. The enamel is applied with layers over layers, some semi-transparent and some opaque but with raised edges which you can clearly feel when running your fingers over the enamel. De Passilé-Sylvestre started their business in 1960 by making one of a kind enamel artworks and jewelry in enamel on copper. (See my last photo for an image of the couple at one of their installation exhibitions in their early days.) This is a mature artwork by the Canadian artistic duo, and a true collectors prize! Measures 16" diameter with a rise at the rim of slightly over an inch. As you can see in my last two photos, the artwork has one very very small ding at the edge that is not at all visible when viewing the artwork from the front, only from the side. There are also some gouges to the enamel at the back. I am guessing that this may have occurred when the artwork was incorrectly stored. None of this is apparent whatsoever when the artwork is hung on the wall or displayed on a shelf. Excellent vintage condition with the above caveats and as shown.

A superb and no doubt one of a kind vintage 1960s 70s handmade copper enamel modernist Bird Dove design artwork from the David Andersen workshop in Oslo, Norway. Such a unique enamel creation with criss-crossing nearly invisible lines that appear and disappear depending on the angle of the light, or as shown in my first photo under strong lighting these lines all appear at once giving an really incredible look to the artwork! Also, the artist chose to depict the bird in such a vivid phantasmagorical psychedelic style that also has ties with Op art and even surrealism! One of the larger examples that I have run across as well! Measures 10.5" diameter by 1" high at rim, and weighs 2.5 pounds prior to packing. Marked at back as shown, "David Andersen Norway" and also has a designer mark that I haven't been able to identify yet, and that looks like "Ley". The enamel is in flawless pristine condition with no chips, cracks, crazing, loss of enamel, or damage of any kind!

A one of a kind vintage 1950s handmade copper enamel and carved two-tone wood modernist figural Three Women design artwork by Miami Beach artist/enamelist Anita Fletcher. Entirely handmade hand carved two-tone irregular asymmetrical wood frame surrounds three inset enamel panels each featuring a different female form in cloisonné enamel. Looks like the ebonized wood has been inset with the lighter colored wood which in turn was inset with the three enamel plaques. (See my closeup photos of the varied coloring of the enamel figures. There is a subtlety to the enamel that isn't apparent from a distance.) A stupendous work of original art from the mid-century of Miami Beach! Measures 15" wide by 13" tall by about 1" at thickest point. Signed at front in the enamel at bottom of the enamel panel farthest to the left, "AF". Also, still retains the original gallery sticker at back for the Huber Gallery at 3917 Alton Road in Miami Beach, and dated 1958. Some of the label has been worn over the years, but I can still make out "enamel on copper and carved wood". Also, still has the artist name, Anita Fletcher, clearly marked. There is some splitting to the wood framing the enamel, but the enamel plaques are flawless. There is also some edge wear and what looks like paint splatter along the outer edges of the ebonized wood frame which I haven't touched, leaving this artwork completely as found. Excellent vintage condition with the above caveats but no damage or detractors whatsoever as shown and ready to hang on the wall.

A superb vintage 1960s 70s handmade copper enamel abstract modernist brooch and earrings set by Hank Frugte of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Entirely handmade hand wrought copper enamel abstract design wearable art brooch and earrings set! Most likely a one of a kind set! Hank Frugte (d. 1990) and his wife Diny (1929-2024) were originally from the Netherlands, but emigrated to Canada just after WWII and settled in Edmonton, Alberta. They were already trained enamelists and artists who brought their talents and experience with them to Edmonton, and created amazing artworks throughout their careers! They also shared their knowledge and experience with other artists by teaching workshops and other educational endeavors in both Canada and the US. The brooch measures 2-3/8" tall by 1-5/8" wide. The earrings measure 1-1/8" by 3/4". Marked at back of the brooch as shown, "Hank Frugte Edmonton". There are some very small fleabites along the edges of the brooch and one of the earrings. These are not at all noticeable when worn, or really at all except with magnification. Excellent vintage condition.

A delightful vintage 1980s handmade copper enamel figurative Two Geese amongst the Marshes design artwork by Quebec, Canada, artist/enamelist Bernard Sequin Poirier. A brightly colored and cheery scene of two geese in what looks like a marsh probably looking for their next meal amongst the flowers and bull rushes by probably one of the most important late 20th century enamel artists from Canada! Counter-enameled in gray with diffused streaks of red on the reverse.
This fine enamel artwork measures 11-5/8" diameter by 1.25" high at rim. Marked at front as shown, "Seguin Poirier". Also has some very small artist notation at back that I cannot make out, but have pictured closely in my photos. Excellent vintage condition really nearly like new with no damage no loss to the enamel no detractors whatsoever.

A striking vintage 1960s handmade copper enamel on wood Op Art Moiré abstract modernist design box by California artist/enamelist Annemarie Davidson of Sierra Madre, California. Super vivid coloring and super eye-catching Op Art moiré pattern inspired design! Born in Berlin in 1920, Davidson came to the US in the mid 1930s, and took up her residence in California in the mid 1940s where she spent the rest of her life creating striking and unique enamel works of art! (For a great biography of the artist take a look at "The Enamels of Annemarie Davidson" by Bernard N. Jazzar and Harold B. Nelson on the Ganoksin metal arts website.) Measures 5" by 5" at top by 2.25" high at edges. Still bears the original artist sticker at the bottom as shown in the photos. The wood section of the box was made by Blaine Rath who collaborated with Davidson often on boxes, bookends, and other projects. There is some very slight separation in one corner of the bottom wood section which is not at all noticeable when displayed but is shown in my third photo closeup of the side, and is no doubt just natural warping of the wood over time from the drying process. Excellent vintage condition with the above caveat and as shown.

A super vivid vintage 1960s 70s handmade copper enamel abstract modernist brooch/pendant by artist/sculptor/enamelist Aristide Gagnon (b. 1930) of Quebec, Canada. A gorgeous piece by an accomplished enamelist who etched the underlying copper before applying the vividly colored enamels overtop in shades of bright almost Kelly green and an orangish metallic gold! Versatile piece that can be worn as a brooch or on a chain or cord as a pendant! Truly a unique piece of wearable art by a Canadian cultural treasure!
This large brooch measures 3" long by 1.5" wide. Marked as shown at back, "A. Gagnon Quebec" for the artist/enamelist/sculptor Aristide Gagnon of Quebec. As noted above, this piece is both a brooch and a pendant, and can be worn on a cord or chain or even a neckring for a great modernist necklace look! I can included a black fabric cord at no additional charge if desired, just let me know in the notes section when making the purchase. In excellent vintage condition.
***A note for collectors: pieces by this artist are sometimes mistakenly attributed to a fictitious Andre Gagnon. I'm not sure where this particular bit of misinformation began, but the marks found on enamel jewelry from the 1960s and 1970s, "A. Gagnon", "Arist. Gagnon", and "Aristide Gagnon", are all for the same person, Aristide Gagnon of Quebec, Canada.***

"Multidisciplinary artist Aristide Gagnon studied at the École des Beaux-Arts de Québec from 1952 to 1956. His work can be found in a number of public and private collections, including at the Musée National des Beaux-Arts du Québec, and encompasses the fields of painting, glass, stained glass and copper enameling. He also developed an interest in metal casting, particularly in bronze, in 1970; using lost-wax and sand casting, he creates primarily spherical forms, which allow him to explore his material and capture its energy and dynamism. He has shown his work in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Quebec and other provinces, the United States and France."

A gorgeous vintage 1960s 70s one of a kind handmade copper enamel abstract modernist Brushstroke design bowl artwork by American artist/enamelist Gwendolyn Orsinger Anderson (1912-2013) aka Orsini. A striking and quite vivid original enamel artwork by this recognized important American enamel artist! In shades of a contrasting blue and orange with red and green smaller sections, and in a 'brushstroke' design that she did several variations of over the years. Perhaps a nod to the Brushstroke Series of artworks from the 1960s by the American Pop artist, Roy Lichtenstein of NYC. In addition, this artwork is elaborately decorated at back nearly as beautiful as the front!
A gorgeous one of a kind creation that will look amazing in just about any decor! (I have another by her from this same series, but in a different color palette - see my store under "Orsini".) Measures 9" diameter by about 1.25" tall at rim. Signed at back with original paper labels as shown in my photos. Excellent vintage condition.

Gwendolyn Anderson, world-renowned artist and enamelist, was born on May 31, 1912, in Riverside, Illinois. Gwen began her artistic career in watercolors, inspired and encouraged by her parents. Her artwork was exhibited at the Corcoran Gallery of Art and other galleries, both public and private. In the early 1950’s, Gwen discovered enameling. She was a self-taught artist, experimenting and developing new and creative enameling techniques. Throughout her lifetime, Gwen held numerous one-woman shows and garnered multiple awards. In 1973, Gwen organized the first enamelist guild in the United States, the National Enamelists Society. Gwen was part of the team of artist volunteers and city personnel in 1974 opening the doors of the Torpedo Factory Art Center in Alexandria, VA. She was a founding member of the Enamelists Gallery located in the art center, and continued to work at the gallery over the next 30 years. Gwen never grew tired of exploring new horizons. She continued traveling the world, visiting over 100 countries, drawing inspiration from the people and cultures. Gwen combined education and travel through participation in the Elder hostel program. Always eager for new adventures, at age 80 she joined Global Volunteers and traveled over the next several years teaching English and building schools for children in Viet Nam, Turkey, Greece and other countries.
A painter, enamel craft worker, teacher and art dealer, she was known as Gwendolyn Orsinger Anderson and later simply as Orsini. A striking vintage 1980s handmade copper enamel abstract post-modernist platter artwork by Peg Miller of Wayne, New Jersey. A visually arresting artwork in enamel on copper! Entirely handmade, and the work of a master of her craft! Peg Miller was a late 20th century enamel artist based in Wayne, New Jersey, known for her abstract compositions on copper. She treated each piece as a painting, using the copper base as her canvas and fusing ground glass with metal oxides at temperatures exceeding 1,700°F. Her work often featured geomorphic themes—volcanoes, ice floes, and tectonic movement captured in rich earth tones and dynamic enamel textures. Sometimes her enamels (like this one) have sections that are bare of enamel, but that have been oxidized dark for contrast with the rich enamel tones! This artwork measures 9.75" diameter by almost 1" high at rim. Fully marked with the original labels at back as shown. Displays perfectly in a case or on a wall, though there are two very small spots where pressure from a plate hanger caused internal crazing in the enamel. This is not at all noticeable when displayed, and you can't see it in my photos unless I magnify the area with up-close photos. Otherwise excellent vintage condition and ready for display.

A huge one of a kind vintage 1950s handmade sterling silver copper enamel modernist pendant on cord necklace by San Diego artist/craftsman Barney Reid (1913-1992). A very large quite rare and outstanding example of the modernist enamel art created by this important California artist from the mid 20th century! Truly wearable art! A founding member of San Diego’s Allied Craftsmen, Reid was a talented artisan and prolific in many media including metal, clay, wood, and marble, as well as oil painting and furniture design. A selection was featured in several shows in the 1950s and 60s at New York City’s Museum of Contemporary Crafts, including Enamels in 1959. Reid's work was prominently displayed in the exhibition "San Diego Craft Revolution" at the Mingei Museum in San Diego in 2012. One of Reid's larger works, a multipanel enamel mobile, sold at Christie's in 2016 for over $32K before auction fees and taxes!
Pendant measures 3-1/2" by 2-3/4" wide on a 26" length leather cord that can be re-tied at varying lengths, and weighs 37.2 grams total. Marked at back with artist signature as shown. Excellent vintage condition.

Here is a short biography of the artist that I compiled from online sources:

Barney Reid grew up in Yuma Valley, Arizona earning his BA at Arizona State College. He moved to San Diego to work as a graphic designer after teaching at Arizona State University (between 1946-49) and launched ReidArt offering screen-printed fabrics and textiles. Barney Reid’s jewelry was exhibited nationally in the 1950s and '60s and for a time he shared a studio with Harry Bertoia. Reid’s enamels were featured in several prominent exhibitions throughout the country including the prestigious annual Decorative Arts and Ceramics Exhibition at the Wichita Art Association in 1952, 1953 and 1954; Enamel: An Historic Survey to the Present Day, organized by the Cooper Union Museum for the Arts of Decoration in 1954; the seminal Enamels at New York’s Museum of Contemporary Crafts in 1959; and the Scripps Annual in Claremont, California in 1964. One of Reid’s most inventive works – an abstraction in which small enamel panels were mounted on a horizontal wood panel in a lively, interlocking composition – was featured in a 1957 article in Craft Horizons – the forerunner to American Craft – in an article titled 'Plaque Bouillabaisse'. Reid’s works from the late ‘40s through the ‘60s are quite scarce. By the mid-1970s until his death he worked almost exclusively in intaglio printmaking.

A huge vintage 1950s handmade multicolored copper enamel 'Butterflies are Free' enamel artwork by California artist Lily Alexander. The largest version of her 'butterflies' themed enamel artworks, and in pristine almost like-new condition! The design consists of three larger and three smaller butterflies circling the center, and their shadows underneath them against a mottled background that graduates from a mottled blue at the outer edges to a pinky-copper at center. One of Alexanders more feminine designs, though she obviously loved animals of all kinds as she so often depicted them in her work! She often associated her designs with popular movies of the time. I had another of hers titled "King of Siam" which depicted a regal Siamese cat. I am calling this one, "Butterflies are Free", though the romantic movie no doubt came after this artwork, but it seems an apt title. Lily Alexander was of Scottish/Japanese origin, and was the artistic half of the husband and wife team that included her and her husband, Paul Alexander. He was the marketing mind that ran the business while his wife handled all the design work and actual crafting of the pieces. They seem to have been primarily active during the 1950s and 60s. The tray measures 12" diameter by about 1" high at the rim. Has a hanging apparatus attached at back as shown, and marked "Hand Crafted in California by Alexander" as shown. There is also an intact sticker at back with a number, "713", perhaps a gallery note. In excellent vintage condition.

A flawless vintage 1950s handmade blues and gold copper enamel abstract modernist tray artwork by California multi-disciplinary artist/designer Sascha Brastoff (1917-1993). An incredible one of a kind work of abstract art in shades of blue and white with gold painted overtop the enamel! An exceptionally large example, and in flawless original condition! His work is getting harder and harder to find especially in the larger formats like this one! Measures 11.75" diameter by 1.75" high at rim when placed flat, and weighs over 2 pounds prior to packing. Signed at front as shown, "Sascha B." and has a number at back that is likely the design number. Brastoff designed these enamel artworks, but had professional enamelists make them for him to his specifications. This was the case with the bulk of his pieces as his designs crossed into so many different arts and crafts. As these enamel artworks were handmade, they are each unique with small differences in the execution of the design. See my last two photos for an image of the artist as a young man, and a short biography of him that I found online. There is an original hanging apparatus at back as shown. This is an enamel artwork, not a catch-all on a table where you throw your keys and coins. Enamel is quite fragile, and I suggest preserving it by displaying it on your wall or in a case. Excellent vintage condition.

A vivid vintage 1960s 70s handmade copper enamel pendant necklace by artist/metalsmith Jules Perrier of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Perrier started making enameled jewelry and art objects in the mid 1950s, and is still in business today although the accent switched to fine jewelry in the 1980s. An absolute work of art! Triangular in shape with silver foil underneath the translucent enamel with a black, white, and candy-apple red design at center. Looks like a red sun shining rays in black and white, but you might see something else. In any case, a beautiful example of his artistry, and in such great shape! The pendant measures about 2.25" tall by 1.25" widest point, and hangs on a 28" handmade hand-hammered link copper chain that is a work of art all by itself, and slips over the head without a closure at back. Looks like this pendant was rarely if ever worn, and the condition of both the pendant and the chain is almost like-new and the necklace would make a great gift! The pendant is marked at back as shown, "Jules Perrier". Excellent vintage condition.

A gorgeous vintage 1950s handmade copper enamel geometric modernist link bracelet from Germany or Austria. A striking geometric design in black with alternating elongated triangles in gold, turquoise, and purple translucent enamel underneath which is silver foil that has been crumpled to create an abstract texture! Bold and visually arresting design superbly hand crafted and in immaculate condition after all these years! As shown in my photo, the bracelet is about 7" long by 1" wide, but because the links are curved it actually fits a larger wrist. Fits my 7.5" wrist comfortably even a bit loosely, so I'm guessing could fit up to a 7.75" wrist Unmarked, but unmistakably in the German and Austrian style of copper enamel jewelry from the period. Often, their jewelry only had small paper labels that either fell off or were removed by the original owners. The backs are counter-enameled in a speckled blue-gray enamel as shown. Excellent vintage condition.

A sunny vintage 1960s handmade copper enamel modernist Sunrise Sunset design brooch by the artistic duo Micheline de Passillé and Yves Sylvestre of Quebec Canada. The design is overall abstract but with elements that suggest a landscape with the earth, clouds and the sun either rising or setting. The couple were more experimental in their early days, and that is seen clearly in this piece of art to wear. De Passilé-Sylvestre started their business in 1960 by making one of a kind enamel artworks and jewelry in enamel on copper. (See my last photo for an image of the couple at one of their installation exhibitions in their early days.) This is one of their earlier designs, and quite attractive overall and especially the choice of colors! Measures 2" by 1-1/2". Marked at back as shown with their early jewelry mark, "de P.-S.". There is one micro flea-bite in the top right hand corner as I have shown in my closeup photo. Hardly if at all noticeable when worn, and doesn't distract in the least. Excellent vintage condition.
