It's a Coalbrookdale double today, but this time we're in Station Road, where a yellow Sportsmark beehive grit bin stands guard on the approach to a half mile section of pavement-free road (indicated by a road sign confirming the lack of a footway, which is affixed to a lamppost next to the grit bin). Another smaller sign is affixed further up the lamppost, warning drivers of a two-tonne limit on this minor route, and utilising a simple abbreviation: "2T."
๐ถ But I would walk a quarter of a mile,
And I would walk a quarter more,
Just to be the man who walked half a mile (on no footway),
To deliver grit-salt to your door ๐ถ

Here, we see the distinctive profile of a yellow Europalite 200L grit bin sitting at the bottom of a set of steps outside the Museum of Iron in Coalbrookdale, Shropshire. In the background, a park bench can be seen at the top of the stairs and, just beyond a brick wall, one of the arches of Coalbrookdale Viaduct, a prominent feature of the village.

A large brick arched viaduct with other partly demolished brick structures beneath and in front of the arches. It is quite a confusing scene. It is a grey day, with black and various shades of brown and red brick.

Part of the 'golden mile' section of the GWR at #Coalbrookdale (1862-64), so called because of the colossal cost of building an elevated railway on a sloping curve, over a large pool, larger works & around. It is quite a sight. #WallsOnWednesday #IndustrialHeritage #Shropshire

A yellow Slingsby 200L grit bin stands in the shadow of Coalbrookdale Viaduct on a grey day, providing a perfect fusion of industrial heritage and modern road safety technology in the world cradle of Industry. Coalbrookdale viaduct once carried trains between Wellington and Craven Arms (via Much Wenlock). The line was opened in stages between 1854-67 and closed to passengers in stages in 1951 and 1962. However, part of the formation was retained for the purpose of carrying coal traffic to and from the now defunct Ironbridge Power Station. Network Rail has plans to reopen the line as a passenger branch by the 2040s, so trains may yet be seen on the viaduct once again.
Happy New Year friends and followers! We're beginning 2026 in style with the first ever Slingsby to be featured on Grit Salt Bin Monday: a robust, heavy duty 200L located directly beneath Coalbrookdale viaduct.

Film poster of Ocean with David Attenborough.
Coalbrookdale and Ironbridge Community Centre, which hosts the Gorge Film Club every other Monday afternoon.
I had a trip to #Coalbrookdale Community Centre this afternoon to watch Ocean with David Attenborough at the bi-weekly Gorge Film Club. Stunning cinematography and a profound message of hope for the future of our seas. Very highly recommended โ

One of my favourite places in Shropshire is the Quaker burial ground in Coalbrookdale. Inside this simple cemetery lie many individuals, including former masters of Iron. Whenever I visit, I feel very lucky I can share their peace.

First ever trip to the New Coracle Shed Museum in Coalbrookdale today. Essentially a recreation of Eustace Rogers' workshop, his story is expertly told and the exhibition is free to visit. Would recommend โ

When the famous #Ironbridge was built at #Coalbrookdale, locals resented the penny toll so they used #coracles to cross. They were also used to catch #rabbits during floods. #history #traditions
