A wide, open desert landscape under a pale blue sky. In the foreground stand two tall, sculptural rock formations. Each looks like a stone pedestal topped with a wide, flat slab, resembling a giant stone mushroom or table. The nearest formation rises from a light gray, sandy base that narrows slightly as it goes up. On top rests a thick, rust-brown rock layer that juts outward, casting a shadow beneath it. Behind it, a second, smaller formation echoes the same shape. The ground is uneven and rocky, scattered with broken stone fragments. In the distance, layered cliffs and mesas stretch across the horizon in muted browns and reds, giving a sense of vastness and isolation. These are hoodoos, formed through a long process of erosion: 1. Layered Sedimentary Rock Millions of years ago, this area was covered by sediments laid down by water and wind. Harder rock layers formed on top of softer ones. 2. Differential Erosion Wind, rain, and freeze-thaw cycles slowly wore away the softer rock below while the harder “caprock” on top resisted erosion. 3. Undercutting and Balance As the softer base eroded, it narrowed, leaving the harder upper layer balanced above it like a protective umbrella. 4. Ongoing Change These formations are temporary on a geological timescale. Eventually, the caprock will fall, and the hoodoo will collapse.
