ππ Collared kingfisher (Todiramphus chloris) The collared kingfisher is a medium-sized bird (22-29 cm) with striking turquoise-blue or greenish upperparts and white to buff underparts. Its defining feature is a broad white collar. Males are typically bluer, while females are greener. This species has an incredibly wide distribution, found from north-east Africa and the Red Sea, across southern Asia, through Southeast Asia and Indonesia, to Polynesia, primarily in coastal areas like mangrove swamps, but also in open woodlands and gardens. Collared kingfishers are patient hunters, perching motionlessly to spot prey like fish, crabs, and insects. Once prey is sighted, they glide swiftly to snatch it, often returning to a perch to subdue larger items by beating them against a branch. At least fourteen subspecies are recognised. Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1) π·: Photo by vinsky2002 via Pixabay https://pixabay.com/photos/collared-kingfisher-perch-wild-bird-4742836/ WUFG
