A sweeping alpine landscape viewed from the summit of Grays Peak, one of Colorado’s famous 14ers, sitting at 14,278 feet. The foreground is a steep slope of angular, multicolored talus—jagged rocks in shades of gray, tan, and rust. Below, a patch of late-season snow clings to a saddle between ridgelines. Beyond it, a dramatic panorama of rugged mountain peaks stretches to the horizon, layered with ridges and valleys carved by millions of years of uplift and erosion. Snowfields still linger in shaded crevices, even in summer, and dark green forests fill the lower valleys between the stark slopes. The mid-ground is a tapestry of reddish-brown slopes, rocky outcrops, and high meadows that appear vivid green from this height. The ridgelines vary in color and texture, shaped by glacial cirques, fault lines, and ancient sedimentary layering exposed by erosion. The sheer scale of the view emphasizes Colorado’s complex geological history—rock formations here date back over a billion years. In the distance, the Front Range and Sawatch Range roll on in overlapping waves of peaks, their forms softening into the hazy blue horizon. The scene captures the raw, expansive beauty of Colorado’s alpine wilderness—untamed, quiet, and humbling. A place where time is measured in glaciers and granite, not minutes or miles.
Top of Grays Peak. Elevation: 14,278 ft. Oxygen: optional. Views: aggressively geologic. That red rock? Iron oxidation. Those snow patches? Glacial leftovers. That feeling? Mild hypoxia. Got any favorite CO 14ers you've done or want to do? Drop em below! #grayspeak #coloradohikes

Almost like a tropical paradise....in the middle of Colorado. Hanging Lake is an amazing location that has a natural lake... basically suspended in what seems to be....air. Looking somewhat like a giant nest filled with water and logs, the colors in the water and logs trapped under the surface create an amazing display of nature's awesome power. Make no mistake, the hike up to the lake is brutal for some and has a 1000-foot vertical climb in just 1.2 miles. Depending on the time of year you go (some of us go in the winter), you might have to climb over avalanches and fallen trees. But the beauty that awaits you at the top will take all that leg pain away... for a little while. You will find several cascading falls on the path up that are stunning as well. No need to worry about being alone, as rangers and hikers are always alert, checking on those who look to be struggling or just need an atta boy! You'll need a timed entry permit as they are trying to keep this area protected for people to enjoy for decades to come.
The green moss and plant life bring amazing color and texture to the lake and resemble the colors of a tropical paradise. Several smaller falls dot the landscape, with a giant waterfall just above the lake called "Spouting Rock". Not a trail for those with mobility issues, it is an enjoyable hike to the top with the last 100 feet being the most challenging as you ascend a natural staircase that looks to be quite dangerous, but there are handrails to keep you safe! The canyon itself is not the place to be in times of heavy rain as flash flooding is an issue. However, the rangers and warning system will let you know if danger is lurking. This might all sound scary, but i just want to make sure you know...this is no stroll in the park, it's a serious hike with consequences for not paying attention....but it's worth every second of difficulty!
