Image of a black background. Left is a mixture of chromatic blacks ranging from blueblack to redblack to greenblack etc... right is pure RGB Zero, Zero, Zero black-black. Text on the right reads: "Dear Artists. Everyone from your art teacher to hysterical screaming people on social media accounts will be screaming at you 'Don't use black! Mix chromatic black!' Here's the thing. Sometimes chromatic blacks aren't black, they're grey, they're blue, they're brown, they're maroon, they're deep emerald, everything but black. And I get it. I understand why you need this skill. You need to know how to mix chromatic neutral colours. They'll be dark, but just not dark enough. And no matter how much pigment you add it just makes it more... MORE? But it just isn't black. Sometimes you need black and sometimes you just can't mix it. This is me, Charl nobody Landsberg, giving you permission to use black. Right out of the tube. If it upsets someone, you're probably doing it right. Love Charl"
